Pressure Input Rod On Brake Booster May Be Loose
A detached pressure input rod will cause the brake pedal to fail, increasing the risk of a crash.

Summary
Volkswagen Group of America, Inc. (Volkswagen
) is recalling certain 2021 Arteon vehicles. The pressure input rod connection on the brake booster may be loose and could detach.
Remedy
Dealers will tighten the pressure input rod connection, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed September 28, 2021. Owners may contact Volkswagen customer service at 1-800-893-5298. Volkswagen
’s number for this recall is 47R3.

Problem Description
The pressure input rod connection on the brake booster may not have been tightened correctly to factory specifications. If the pressure input rod detaches from the brake booster, the brake pedal will not work correctly to stop the vehicle, increasing the risk of a crash. The driver can still utilize the electric parking brake to stop the vehicle.
Corrective Action
Inspect and, if necessary, tighten the affected screw to the proper value.

Owner notification will take place in September 2021. Owner letter examples are included in this bulletin for your reference.
Repair Overview
Verify torque on brake booster pushrod.
Repair Procedure
Remove driver side instrument panel cover:
- Switch off the ignition.
- Remove the bolt <1>.
- Remove the two clips <2>.
- Remove the bolt <3>.
- Remove the driver side instrument panel cover <4> from the instrument panel.
- Disconnect the footwell lamp connector.
Locate brake booster push rod:
- Work will be performed on the brake booster pushrod in the area shown <circle>.
Press brake booster push rod dust boot back:
- Press dust boot <1> back approximately 1 cm.
- This will expose the flat edges <circle> as seen in photo <2>.
Verify torque:
Torque the pushrod connection to 10 Nm while counterholding on the flat edges with a 7 mm wrench.
CAUTION
When removing the tools, there is a possibility the bolted connection could accidently be loosened again. Ensure the tools are removed carefully and not in the loosening direction.
Verify connection did not loosen:
Draw a line with a suitable pen on both sides of the bolted connection of the pushrod.
- DO NOT apply brake pedal pressure for this step.
- DO NOT counterhold the pushrod.
- In order to identify a loosened bolted connection, turn the pushrod with an open-end 16 mm wrench by about 45° in loosening direction <arrow>.
- After turning the pushrod, check the previously made marks.
- If the marks are still lined up <3>:

- No further work is required.

- Reinstall dust boot to original position.

- Reinstall instrument panel in the reverse order of removal.

- Proceed to Section C.
- If the marks are not lined up <4>:

- Repeat tightening steps as listed above until you can verify that the pushrod connection did not loosen.
What is the safety concern for Safety Recall 47R3?
The pressure input rod connection on the brake booster may not have been tightened correctly to factory specifications. If the pressure input rod detaches from the brake booster, the brake pedal will not work correctly to stop the vehicle, increasing the risk of a crash.
The driver can still utilize the electric parking brake to stop the vehicle.
What is the repair for Safety Recall 47R3?
To correct this defect, your authorized Volkswagen dealer will inspect and, if necessary, tighten the affected screw to the proper value. This work will take about an hour to complete and will be performed for you free of charge. Please keep in mind that your dealer may need additional time for the preparation of the repair, as well as to accommodate their daily workshop schedule.

Due to the restricted space, a longer torque wrench will not work. These instructions were created using a 1/4” mechanical torque wrench adapted to a 3/8” drive crows foot. A similar combination of tools can be used. 1. Verify torque: Torque the pushrod connection to 10 Nm while counterholding on the flat edges with a 7 mm wrench. CAUTION When removing the tools, there is a possibility the bolted connection could accidently be loosened again. Ensure the tools are removed carefully and not in the loosening direction. FMVSS 1 : NR FMVSS 2 : NR Description of the Safety Risk : If the pressure input rod detaches from the brake booster, the brake pedal will not work correctly to stop the vehicle, increasing the risk of a crash. The driver can still utilize the electric parking brake to stop the vehicle. Description of the Cause : The required torque (min. 9 Nm) of the self-locking screw connection on the two-piece brake booster pressure input rod may be too low due to a deviation of applied screw torque. As a result, the self-locking mechanism of the screw connection is impaired. Consequently, the pressure input rod can become loose during the service life of the vehicle and detach from the brake booster. Component Part Number : 3Q1.614.010.BD Supplier Identification : Component Manufacturer Name : Robert Bosch GmbH Address : Robert Bosch Strasse 1 Immenstadt Foreign States 87509 Country : Germany Chronology : April 14, 2021: A single incident was reported from a foreign market to Volkswagen AG. Volkswagen AG initiated analysis regarding the incident, including scope, failure modes, and possible root causes. April 2021 – August 2021: Conducted in-depth analysis with the factory and the supplier (along with X-ray and CT scan request). Identification of potentially affected vehicles started. July 10, 2021: A second incident was reported from a foreign market to Volkswagen AG. Internal analysis ongoing. August 26, 2021: Topic presented to Volkswagen Pre-Product Safety Committee. August 27, 2021: Topic presented to the Volkswagen Product Safety Committee; committee requested further details regarding the identification of vehicles. September 01, 2021: Volkswagen Product Safety Committee decided a recall. Note: Throughout this timeframe and to-date, Volkswagen is not aware of any incidents in the United States. To date, Volkswagen is only aware of two reported field incidents worldwide. Part 573 Safety Recall Report 21V-695 Page 3 The information contained in this report was submitted pursuant to 49 CFR §573 Description of Remedy : Description of Remedy Program : At no cost to customers, dealers will torque the affected screw to the proper value and check afterwards. Because the affected vehicles are within the New Vehicle Limited Warranty period, Volkswagen will not offer a reimbursement plan under this recall. How Remedy Component Differs from Recalled Component : No part will be replaced under this recall. The existing part will be checked and torqued to the correct value if needed. What distinguishes the recalled component is that the torque value is not correct. Identify How/When Recall Condition was Corrected in Production : Since May 10, 2021, the factory has engaged a check at the end of line to identify and correct any possible loose screw connection. The factory rework department was equipped with automated documentation (camera-based) and employees were instructed again on the procedure in June 2021.
