Problem Description Vehicles affected by this recall are equipped with accessory side steps, and are missing the yellow GVWR Load Carrying Capacity Reduced label that should have been installed at the same time the accessory side steps were installed. Without the label present for reference, someone could overload the vehicle by 20.5 kg/45 lb. Overloading a vehicle may increase the risk of a crash. Corrective Action Install the required yellow “Load Carrying Capacity Reduced” label. Code Visibility On or about March 31, 2022, the campaign code will be applied to affected vehicles. Owner Notification Owner notification will take place in March 2022. Owner letter examples are included in this bulletin for your reference. March 2022 09D9 Page 9 of 10 Apply label to driver side B-pillar:  The Load Carrying Capacity Reduced Label <1> must be placed on the B-pillar within one inch of the Tire and Loading Information label <2>.  Clean the surface of the B-pillar with isopropyl alcohol prior to applying the label.  Ensure minimal air bubbles are created when installing the new label. NOTE  The surface of the B-pillar must be clean, dry, and free from oil residue prior to applying the Load Carrying Capacity Reduced Label.  The Load Carrying Capacity Reduced Label must not cover any other existing label.  Handle the replacement label carefully. Do not touch the adhesive backing. This label is required because FMVSS 110 states necessity of label reporting cargo capacity reduction of weights exceeding 1.5% of vehicle GVWR (Gross Weight Vehicle Rating). During the review, a slight weight discrepancy was identified in the recorded versus actual weight of the side-step accessory. Investigation on the effect on vehicle labeling and safety was initiated. From June 9, 2021 – December 1, 2021, internal ongoing analysis and calculations to determine accuracy of accessory weights, the accuracy of vehicle weight reduction labels, and vehicle safety margins. Ongoing analysis to identify potentially affected population. On December 1, 2021, the topic was initially presented Volkswagen Product Safety Committee. The Committee requested additional information and clarification to determine impact of side-step to overweight condition, including whether the issue presented a risk to motor vehicle safety or an FMVSS non-compliance. From December through early February, additional analysis into safety and compliance impact. VWGoA is not aware of any reports of accidents, injuries, or warranty claims related to this condition. Description of Remedy : Description of Remedy Program : At no cost to customers, authorized Volkswagen dealers will affix one yellow label stating the correct weight reduction from market delivery option codes installed by VWoA prior to new vehicle sale. Volkswagen will not offer a reimbursement plan under this recall. How Remedy Component Differs from Recalled Component : The recall remedy component can be distinguished readily from the recalled component because it is a yellow label affixed to the vehicle (currently there is no yellow lable affixed).
