Problem Description The gearbox in affected vehicles may not contain a sufficient volume of gearbox oil. If this condition is present in the vehicle, it might lead to clutch slip, thus interrupting the power transmission between the gearbox and engine. This could result in a temporary loss of motive power, increasing the risk of a crash. Additionally, when operating the vehicle in a racetrack environment, this issue can possibly lead to generation of oil foam that could exit through the breather valve and create the risk of a fire. Corrective Action Check and, if necessary, adjust gearbox oil level. Code Visibility On or about April 15, 2022, the campaign code will be applied to affected vehicles. R8 COUPE 5 Production Dates : APR 21, 2021 – DEC 02, 2021 VIN Range 1 : Begin : WUAKBAFX7M7901167 End : WUAKBAFX1N7900761 ✔ Not sequential Part 573 Safety Recall Report 22V-225 Page 2 The information contained in this report was submitted pursuant to 49 CFR §573 Description of Defect : Description of the Defect : The gearbox in affected vehicles may not contain a sufficient volume of gearbox oil. FMVSS 1 : NR FMVSS 2 : NR Description of the Safety Risk : If this condition is present in the vehicle, it might lead to clutch slip, thus interrupting the power transmission between the gearbox and engine. This could result in a temporary loss of motive power, increasing the risk of a crash. Additionally, when operating the vehicle in a racetrack environment, this issue can possibly lead to generation of oil foam that could exit through the breather valve and create the risk of a fire. Description of the Cause : As the necessary amount of oil filled into the gearbox at the end of the line corresponds to the weight of the gearbox before filling, a defective weighing machine at the supplier led to gearboxes where the amount of oil filled into might be less than required by factory specifications. Identification of Any Warning that can Occur : Clutch Slip resulting from an insufficient amount of oil within the gearbox can trigger a warning message displayed in the instrument cluster. Immediate investigation regarding root cause started, and the faulty gearbox was send back to the supplier to be analyzed. Part 573 Safety Recall Report 22V-225 Page 3 The information contained in this report was submitted pursuant to 49 CFR §573 January – March 2022: Investigation regarding root cause showed that there was a deviation in weight measurement process that affects the amount of oil that is filled into the gearbox. Blocking of all assembled gearboxes in production and those already send out. The failure resolution process lead to an adoption of measurement process. The issue is reported to the Audi Product Safety Committee and Multi Brand Commitee. March 30, 2022: The Audi Product Safety Committee decides a voluntary worldwide safety recall. Audi is not aware of any warranty claims or customer claims due to this issue. Description of Remedy : Description of Remedy Program : The oil level within the gearbox will be checked and corrected if necessary. Audi will offer a reimbursement plan under this recall. How Remedy Component Differs from Recalled Component : The recalled component is the amount of oil that was filled in the gearbox G052529A*. The recall remedy component can be distinguished from the recalled component because the oil level will be according to requirements after the check. Identify How/When Recall Condition was Corrected in Production : Vehicles produced after December 21, 2021 have been built with gearboxes filled with the correct amount of oil.
