Description of the Cause : All known cases were due to a liquid spill on the rear seats of the vehicle. Identification of Any Warning that can Occur : Several warning messages will appear if the gateway control module shuts down. The error messages occur due to the interrupted communication between several systems. Even though several systems are displaying a malfunction, not all of these systems are impacted. At this point AUDI AG was not aware of any warranty claims in the US for Audi A6/A7 vehicles and field monitoring was decided for those models. August 2022: NHTSA asked Volkswagen Group of America for an overview of this topic during the next Quarterly Meeting due to 2 VOQ´s indicating a gateway failure due to liquid ingress. August – September 2022: Evaluation of field situation and detailed analysis of known warranty cases. Upon a detailed research of warranty claims, at that point 38 cases were identified to be potentially related to this issue. The topic was also reported back to the Product Safety Committee based on the updated field situation. September 14, 2022: Audi presented an overview of the U.S. market situation to the NHTSA ODI during the company’s Quarterly Meeting. Part 573 Safety Recall Report 22V-861 Page 5 The information contained in this report was submitted pursuant to 49 CFR §573 September – November 2022: Due to some differences in the location and the design of the gateway control module, additional analysis continued with respect to the root cause and the impact of a liquid spill specifically on A6/A7 models. Contrary to the Q5 all known cases were confirmed to have occurred due to a liquid spill. There is no additional root cause from the outside or from the vehicle design itself. November 14, 2022: The Audi Product Safety Committee decides a voluntary worldwide safety recall for the affected vehicles that did not receive the protective cover in production. At the time of determination, Audi had identified 46 potentially related claims in the US received between July 2019 and October 2022. Audi is not aware of any crashes or injuries due to this issue. Description of Remedy : Description of Remedy Program : At no cost to customers, Audi dealers will install a protective cover for the gateway control module which will protect the part from liquid ingress. Audi will not offer a reimbursement plan under this recall. How Remedy Component Differs from Recalled Component : No parts are being replaced. Audi has decided that a defect, which relates to motor vehicle safety, exists in certain 2019- 2022 model year Audi vehicles. Our records show that you are the owner of a vehicle affected by this action. What is the issue? If liquid reaches and enters the gateway control module located under the rear middle seat, usually due to a liquid spill on the rear seats, it is being switched off as part of the safety concept. Water/liquid ingress into the gateway control module may lead to various internal errors due to short circuits within the control unit. The gateway control module has a safety concept in case implausible signals are detected in the control unit. If such implausible signals are detected, the gateway switches off its function in order to avoid unwanted vehicle reactions. The vehicle remains steerable and the brake system is fully operable. The engine goes into emergency mode and remains in operation with reduced power. Unexpected reduced engine power may create an increased risk of a crash in certain driving situations. What will we do? To correct this defect, your authorized Audi dealer will install a protective cover for the gateway control module which will protect the part from liquid ingress.
