If the strut mount is deformed, it can lead to improper torque on one of the bolted connections on the right or left suspension strut mounting. FMVSS 1 : NR FMVSS 2 : NR Description of the Safety Risk : Based on vehicle driving tests with the underlying phenomena the wheel guidance and hence the track/lane stability might be impaired, but customers may not notice the issue. This may increase the risk for a crash without warning. Description of the Cause : On vehicles of a limited production period, the strut bearings might be deformed due to a failure in the assembly process of the press-fit nuts. Analysis started September 2022: VW reported issue to supplier. Supplier informed VW that potentially incorrect manufactured parts may have been shipped to VW. September – October 2022: Internal tests (including test drives with loosened screw connections) and risk analysis initiated. Part 573 Safety Recall Report 23V-437 Page 3 The information contained in this report was submitted pursuant to 49 CFR §573 November 2022: Identification of potentially affected vehicles started. January 2023: Internal tests and risk analyses showed that the vehicle remains steerable and braking is not impacted. February 22, 2023: Topic was presented to Volkswagen Product Safety Committee. Based on the technical evaluation and risk analysis, it was determined that an uncontrollable driving situation cannot occur. Additionally, there are no known accidents, injuries, or cases of property damage in the field. Based on these findings, a service campaign was decided. June 14, 2023: Topic was presented to Volkswagen Product Safety Committee again upon information that this topic could be seen as a violation of a local safety standard (noncompliance) in one foreign country [strut mountings that could come loose are explicitly mentioned in the local regulation] , which would require a recall campaign in that country. Out of an abundance of caution, the committee decided a recall for the US as well. Description of Remedy : Description of Remedy Program : At no cost to customers, authorized Volkswagen dealers will inspect and, if necessary, replace the right and/or left suspension strut mounting(s). Volkswagen will not offer a reimbursement plan under this recall. How Remedy Component Differs from Recalled Component : Process failure at assembly at supplier. Criteria 01 and 01 + 02 vehicles, left front strut mount inspection: • Remove the bolt at the front of the left strut mount in the direction of travel. All vehicles continued: • Using a 0.05mm (0.002”) feeler gauge <1>, check if there is a gap between the strut mount(s) and the body . • If a gap is detected: o The strut mount requires replacement o Proceed to Section C. • If there is not a gap detected, install a new bolt and torque to 20 Nm + 90º. Replace the deformed strut mount(s): CAUTION Incorrectly pre-tensioning the spring increases the risk of injury! Components are under tension and loosening the threaded connection can lead to injury! • Make sure the spring is positioned correctly in the spring compressor. • Pretension the spring, until the strut mount is released. • Replace the affected strut mount(s) according to the ELSA repair manual: o See ELSA Repair Manual: Repair Manual > Chassis > Suspension, Wheels, and Steering, 40 Front Suspension > Suspension Strut and Upper Control Arm > Spring, Removing and installing. Volkswagen Customer Protection 40T3_DLR_LAUNCH Repair Available – Safety Recall 40T3 / Suspension Strut Mountings This notice is for:  Dealer Principal  General Manager  Sales Managers  Service Manager  Parts Manager  Service Consultant  Warranty Administrator  Technicians Date: June 22, 2023 Issue: Effective immediately, Safety Recall 40T3 replaces Service Action 40S9. During strut assembly, an issue may have caused a deformation of the strut mount. If the strut mount is deformed, it can lead to improper torque on one of the bolted connections on the right or left suspension strut mounting. This may increase the risk of a crash without warning. Repair:  REPAIR AVAILABLE – June 23, 2023 / Inspect and, if necessary, replace the right and/or left suspension strut mounting(s).  See ELSA/ServiceNet for complete repair & claiming instructions  Check both the daily Campaign Open Inventory report and OMD for affected vehicles in inventory. Verify OPEN status in ELSA on the day of repair.  Repair every affected inventory vehicle before delivery to consumers. Parts Department: There will be no parts allocation. Please reference the Repair Projection Tool to view your potential VIN population. Parts will be managed by Free Order.
