Clutch Can Fail to Engage Causing a Loss of Power

A decrease in transmission oil pressure can cause the clutch to fail to engage, resulting in a sudden loss of drive power, increasing the risk of a crash.

Summary

VolkswageneBay Group of America, Inc. (VolkswageneBay) is recalling certain 2013-2015 Jetta Hybrid vehicles equipped with a DQ200 7-Speed DSG Automatic Transmission. Hairline cracks can develop within the transmission electronic gearbox (mechatronic unit), causing an internal transmission oil leak and a decrease in oil pressure.

 

Remedy

VolkswageneBay will notify owners, and dealers will update the transmission software, free of charge. The software remedy is currently under development. The recall is expected to begin February 4, 2020. Owners may contact VolkswageneBay customer service at 1-800-893-5298. VolkswageneBay’s number for this recall is 34J6.

Problem DescriptionHairline cracks may develop in the accumulator housing of the transmission (mechatronic unit), leaking and leading to insufficient transmission oil pressure. If this happens, the transmission warning light will illuminate in the instrument panel. If the warning light is ignored and the vehicle is driven, the clutch may not engage. There could be a sudden loss of power to the wheels, potentially leading to a vehicle crash.
Interim Corrective ActionThis circular will provide claiming and repair instructions in the event a vehicle arrives with specific faults in control unit 0002 prior to the release of the 34J6 Safety Recall final remedy.
PrecautionsCustomers are advised: Do not ignore the transmission warning light if it comes on. If the light comes on, owners are advised to contact an authorized VolkswageneBay dealer without delay to have the vehicle inspected. Please refer to the vehicle owner’s manual for more information on warning lights.

IMPORTANT REMINDER ON VEHICLES AFFECTED BY SAFETY & COMPLIANCE RECALLS

New Vehicles in Dealer Inventory: It is a violation of federal law for a dealer to deliver a new motor vehicle or any new or used item of motor vehicle equipment (including a tire) covered by this notification under a sale or lease until the defect or noncompliance is remedied. By law, dealers must correct, prior to delivery for sale or lease, any vehicle that fails to comply with an applicable Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard or that contains a defect relating to motor vehicle safety.  

Pre-Owned Vehicles in Dealer Inventory: Dealers should not deliver any pre-owned vehicles in their inventory which are involved in a safety or compliance recall until the defect has been remedied.

Dealers must ensure that every affected inventory vehicle has this campaign completed before delivery to consumers.

Fill out and affix Campaign Completion Label (CAMP 010 000) after work is complete.

Issue:Hairline cracks may develop in the accumulator housing of the transmission (mechatronic unit), leaking and leading to insufficient transmission oil pressure. If this happens, the transmission warning light will illuminate in the instrument panel. If the warning light is ignored and the vehicle is driven, the clutch may not engage. There could be a sudden loss of power to the wheels, potentially leading to a vehicle crash.
PrecautionsCustomers are advised: Do not ignore the transmission warning light if it comes on. If the light comes on, owners are advised to contact an authorized Volkswagen dealer without delay to have the vehicle inspected. Please refer to the vehicle owner’s manual for more information on warning lights.

Issue:Due to a manufacturing deviation at a sub-supplier, hairline cracks may develop in the accumulator housing of the transmission (mechatronic unit).

Once a crack has developed over a certain point, it may lead to an internal leak and impact transmission oil pressure, which, in turn, activates a warning light. In some cases the clutch cannot be engaged any longer due to insufficient oil pressure.

Reduced oil pressure leads to an illuminated warning light on the instrument panel. Vehicle drivability is typically maintained in such cases but if the warning light is ignored it can lead to a situation where the clutch cannot be engaged any longer due to insufficient oil pressure.

Reprogramming

Overview – Introduction

The Immobilizer is a theft-deterrent device that adds a layer of security to VWGoA vehicles that include the following brands: AudieBay, Bentley, Lamborghini, and VWeBay. Certain repairs such as replacing emission parts cannot be performed without resetting the immobilizer code for the vehicle. This is done by a technician using the VAS for PC software to synchronize the immobilizer code embedded in the ignition key with other codes resident on parts such as the Transmission Control Module, Engine Control Module, and Instrument Cluster.

 

Before you can replace an emission part

Whenever you replace an emission-related control module, the immobilizer must be reset using the VAS for PC software. This can only be done if you meet the following requirements:

  • You have enrolled into the program (see step 1 - Complete Pass Thru Enrollment Forms)
  • You have received an email from VWGoA that contains a Security ID and Password to access the immobilizer application hosted in Germany
  • You have received an email from VWGoA that contains a certificate file (e.g. IndepeDeale.30001.300999.pfx)
  • You have installed the certificate onto your PC
  • You have obtained a J 2534-1 Pass Thru device (see recommended J 2534-1 Pass Thru devices)
  • You have performed the steps outlined in VAS for PC Setup

Pass thru devices are available for purchase from a recommended Manufacturer for registered workshops to perform Immobilizer functions. The Pass Thru devices that have been tested to work with VAS for PC follow:
