Insufficiently Crimped Brake Master Cylinder
If the piston pops out of the master cylinder housing, a complete loss of braking or unintended brake application can occur, increasing the risk of a crash. Owners may initially notice brake fluid leaking onto the vacuum booster, or a change in brake pedal travel and feel.

Summary
Brake Parts, Inc. (Brake Parts) is recalling certain brake master cylinders sold under Raybestos, NAPA, and AC Delco brands, part numbers MC391232, M4840, and 18M2578, respectively sold as aftermarket replacement parts for 2012-2017 Volkswagen Beetle, 2005-2018 Volkswagen
Jetta and 2007-2010 Volkswagen
Jetta GLI. The crimping of the aluminum housing may be insufficient, allowing the master cylinder piston to pop out of the housing.
Remedy
Brake Parts will notify the distributors that sold this product, and provide a replacement part, free of charge. The recall began August 13, 2020. We are writing to inform you that Brake Parts Inc LLC (BPI) is conducting a voluntary safety recall of certain New Master Cylinders, Part No. MC391232, intended for aftermarket installation on the passenger vehicles listed below. Our records indicate that products covered by this recall may have been shipped to you.

What is the Problem?
BPI has discovered that the master cylinderโs aluminum housing may be insufficiently crimped, which, in extreme cases, may allow the master cylinder piston to pop out of the cylinder housing early in its service life. If the piston pops out of the housing, a complete loss of braking or unintended brake application can occur. Prior to total failure, the operator may experience some loss of braking power due to brake fluid leaking past the primary piston and damaging the vacuum booster.
How Can the Recalled Part be Identified?
You can identify the recalled product by the part number and date code. The part number can be found on the box and the date code is stamped on the part, as shown in the photograph below. Only Part No. MC391232 with a date code containing the letter J, K, L, A or B (covering 2016 through 2020) are included in this recall.
What You Should Do?
- Product Remaining in Your Inventory: Please IMMEDIATELY return all Part No. MC391232 with date codes that contain the letter J, K, L, A or B that remain in your inventory.ย To ensure proper tracking, please call 1-800-323-0354 or email claims@brakepartsinc.com to obtain an RMA number. BPI will provide full merchandise credit for returned products, including freight charges.ย All returned product must be clearly marked with the RMA # on the package.ย File your claim with servicing DC by providing the Part Number, quantity, and assigned RMA #.

Our supplier, Brake Parts Inc., has decided that a defect which relates to motor vehicle safety exists in certain NAPA-brand aftermarket brake master cylinders, Part No. M4840, manufactured 01/01/2016 through 04/27/2020. These master cylinders are intended for installation in the following vehicles: 2012-2017 Volkswagen Beetle, 2005-2018 Volkswagen

Clasico. This recall applies only to products that have been installed less than one year or that have not yet been installed.
We are notifying you because our records indicate that you may have purchased one of these products. Therefore, please review this letter carefully.
What is the Problem?

What Should You Do?
If you purchased a NAPA M4840 master cylinder and the part has been installed for less than one year, please contact your NAPA dealer or installer to initiate the replacement process. To confirm that your master cylinder is covered by this recall, you will be asked to provide a copy of the receipt or invoice that includes the dealer/installer name, location, and date of purchase. The dealer/installer will order a replacement part and notify you when it is available for installation. A replacement will be provided free of charge (parts and labor). The repair should take approximately two hours to perform, but due to scheduling, the dealer/installer may require your vehicle for a longer period of time.
If your NAPA M4840 master cylinder has not yet been installed, please return it to your NAPA dealer for a refund.
If you no longer own the vehicle on which this product has been installed, please forward this notice to the new owner and provide the new ownerโs address to Mr. Doug Harmon, Brake Parts Inc., at 1-800-323-0354 or bpi.claims@brakepartsinc.com.
In accordance with Federal law, any vehicle lessor receiving this recall notice must forward a copy of this notice to the lessee within ten days.
