Section C โ Inspecting Fuel Rail Bolts
The inspection will consist of three steps:
๏ท All four fuel rail bolts must be inspected.
Step 1 – Visual inspection for broken bolt,
obviously loose bolts, exposed injector seal.
Step 2 โ Check for loose bolts by hand.
Step 3 โ Carry out a gap test.
Inspection Step 1 (visual inspection):
๏ท Visually inspect all four fuel rail bolts for broken
bolts or bolts that have backed out and are
obviously loose <arrow A>.
๏ท Visually inspect for signs that the fuel rail is
pulling away from the cylinder head and
exposing the fuel injector seal <arrow B>.
๏ท If any of the four bolts are broken or loose, or
a fuel injector seal is exposed:
o The fuel rail and injectors must be
replaced.
o Proceed to Section D.
๏ท If all four bolts pass the first inspection,
proceed to Inspection Step 2.
Inspection Step 2 (check for loose bolts by hand):
๏ท Check for loose fuel rails bolts by hand,
without using tools.
๏ท All four fuel rail bolts must be checked.
๏ท If any of the four bolts are loose:
o The fuel rail and injectors must be
replaced.
o Proceed to Section D.
๏ท If all four bolts pass the second inspection,
proceed to Inspection Step 3.

Inspection Step 3 (gap test):
NOTE
It may be possible that a fuel rail bolt is loose, but
the pressure of a damaged fuel rail bracket prevents
the bolt from be loosened by hand.
๏ท ALL FOUR FUEL RAIL BOLTS MUST BE
INSPECTED.
๏ท Check the gap between the cylinder head and
the back side of the fuel rail bracket using a
0.1 mm feeler gauge.
NOTE
For illustration purposes, a standard piece of printer
paper was used. Using a 0.1 mm feeler gauge is the
preferred method, although a piece of standard
printer paper will also work.
๏ท If the feeler gauge passes between the
cylinder head and fuel rail bracket and stops at
the fuel rail bolt, this is evidence that the bolt
has loosened (fig. 2).
๏ท If any bolt fails the gap test:
o The fuel rail and fuel injectors must be
replaced.
o Proceed to Section D.
๏ท If the feeler gauge does not pass between the
cylinder head and fuel rail bracket, the
connection is OK (fig. 1). Move on to the next
connection.
๏ท If all four fuel rail bolts have passed all three
inspection steps:
o The fuel rail bolts must be replaced
one at a time.
o Proceed to the next step.
