Issue During the PODS control module programming step using PODS Programmer VWAAUDI69BY,
the programming may fail due to a communication interruption (LED flashes red two times).
A loss or change in the 12V power supply to the PODS Programmer will lead to a loss of
communication between the PODS Programmer and the PODS control module.
Resolution After evaluating PODS programming failures, it was discovered that the vehicles 12V outlet power
source was not a consistent power source, regardless if a battery maintainer was attached.
Especially on vehicles with a weakened battery. When updating over 1000 PODS control modules
using an external 12V power source, there were zero PODS control module failures.
Prior to attempting the programming step outlined in the 69BY work instructions:
 Ensure the PODS Programmer is properly connected to the PODS control module.
 To ensure there is no interruption in the 12V power supply, an external 12V power source
(locally sourced) is the preferred method of powering the PODS Programmer. Using the
vehicle’s 12V power source increases the risk of PODS programming failures.

INTERIM SAFETY RECALL NOTICE FOR YOUR VEHICLE
A recall repair is not yet available
This notice is sent to you in accordance with the National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act. Audi has decided
that a defect, which relates to motor vehicle safety, exists in certain Audi vehicles. Our records show that you are
the owner of a vehicle affected by this action.
About this recall: The passenger occupant detection system (PODS) may detect a malfunction and
switch off the passenger airbag even though the seat may be occupied. However,
the airbag system and the warning strategy operate as designed. If the PODS
malfunctions, a warning light in the instrument panel comes on together with an
acoustic warning sound and an error message is displayed in the instrument cluster.
The airbag indicator light shows “passenger airbag off”. This error often occurs
sporadically and for a limited amount of time. When the error and consequently the
warnings disappear, the passenger airbag works again as intended without any
action/interaction necessary by the customer.
In the event of a crash necessitating passenger airbag activation, there would be an
increased risk of injury to the occupant seated in the front passenger seat if the
passenger airbag is switched off/not working.
A recall repair is not yet
available.
A recall repair is still under investigation and currently being developed. Because of
this, Audi does not yet have a timeframe in which we advise you to expect the repair
to become available. We will send another letter as soon as the recall work can be
completed on your vehicle.
What you can do now: You can continue driving your vehicle. Please ensure that everyone who uses your
vehicle has read the owner’s manual and is familiar with how the PODS works for
the front passenger seat.
As designed, in case of a malfunction within the PODS, a warning light in the
instrument panel will come on together with a warning sound and an error message
will be displayed in the instrument cluster (the airbag indicator light shows
“passenger airbag off”). If this happens, stop using the front passenger seat and
make arrangements to have the vehicle inspected/repaired at an Audi dealership as
soon as possible.
Please do not contact your dealer about this recall unless you believe your vehicle
is experiencing the recall condition described in this letter.

Problem Description The passenger occupant detection system (PODS) may detect a malfunction and switch off the
passenger airbag even though the seat may be occupied.

control module.
Precautions Audi has advised that customers can continue driving these vehicles. Please ensure that
everyone who uses your vehicle has read the owner’s manual and is familiar with how the PODS
works for the front passenger seat.
As designed, in case of a malfunction within the PODS, a warning light in the instrument panel

 Push the headrest into the lowest position.
 Move the front seat all the way to the rear and
then into its lowest position.
 Remove seat bolt covers.
 Remove front bolts <2> from the seat rail.
 Move the front seat all the way forward and up.

Remove storage compartment (if equipped):

Disconnect connectors:
 Remove the expanding clip <2> and fold up
the section of the carpet <1>.
 Unclip the cable holder <3>.
WARNING
Before handling pyrotechnic components (for
example, disconnecting the connector), the person
handling it must “discharge static electricity”. This
can be done by touching the door striker, for
example.
CAUTION
The ignition must be switched off before
disconnecting airbag connector <5>.
 Disconnect the connectors in the specified
order from the connector station.

 Carefully remove the front seat from the
vehicle.

Due to the weight and size of the front passenger

helpful in removing the seat.

one catch is visible from behind .
Use a flashlight if necessary.
 Using the Assembly Tool -3399-, carefully pry
the adjustment wheel off the seat .

 Detach the molding <1> from the seat cover in
the front and side areas using the -3370-.
 Detach the molding <2> of the cover in the rear
area using the -3370-.

 Disengage the molding <1> on the side, and
the molding <2> in the area of the rear cover
using the -3370-.
NOTE
The seat depth adjuster support (plastic) remains on
the padding.
 Carefully disengage the cushion <1> with
cover <2> at the rear of the seat pan .
 Remove the cover and cushion from the seat
pan, while doing so if necessary free up the
seat heating wiring harness.

CAUTION

unclipping.

of the seat cover molding (circle) and gently
pulling the molding out of the tabs <3> in the

Free up wiring harnesses:
NOTE
 Take photos of wiring harness location prior to
removal.
 There may be slight variations of harness
routing depending on vehicle equipment.
CAUTION
STOP!
The connector must be removed exactly parallel
with the PODS ECU. The center pin in the PODS
ECU is fragile and must not be bent during removal.
A damaged center pin will cause PODS faults.

Before removing the sensor mat from the seat
cushion, verify the resistance of the seat heater
element (if equipped):

Removing PODS Sensor Mat:

Do not use a high heat setting.
Keep the heat gun moving. Do not hold the heat on

 Alternately heat the PODS sensor mat surface
still adhered to the seat cushion and behind
the PODS sensor mat (as shown), while
carefully and slowly pulling the PODS sensor
mat away from the seat cushion.
 Pull in the direction of .
 Only pull upward at a very slight angle.
 DO NOT pull up perpendicular to the seat
cushion surface.
 Remove each section equally.
 Carefully pull wiring harness through the seat
cushion.

Subject: Safety Recall 69BY – Passenger Occupant Detection System (PODS)
Dear Audi Owner,
This notice is sent to you in accordance with the National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act.
Audi has decided that a defect, which relates to motor vehicle safety, exists in certain 2015-
2020 model year Audi vehicles. Our records show that you are the owner of a vehicle affected
by this action.
What is the issue? The passenger occupant detection system (PODS) may detect a
malfunction and switch off the passenger airbag even though the seat
may be occupied.
However, the airbag system and the warning strategy operate as
designed. If the PODS malfunctions, a warning light in the instrument
panel comes on together with an acoustic warning sound and an error
message is displayed in the instrument cluster. The airbag indicator
light shows “passenger airbag off”. This error often occurs sporadic and
for a limited amount of time. When the error and consequently the
warnings disappear, the passenger airbag works again as intended
without any action/interaction necessary by the customer. In the event
of a crash necessitating passenger airbag activation there would be an
increased risk of injury to the occupant seated in the front passenger
seat if the passenger airbag is switched off/not working.
What will we do? To correct this defect, your authorized Audi dealer will replace the
passenger occupant detection system (PODS) sensor mat and update
the PODS control module. This work will take about four hours to
complete and will be performed for you free of charge. Please keep in
mind that your dealer will need to schedule your repair based on part
availability. They may also need additional time for the preparation of
the repair, as well as to accommodate their daily workshop schedule.

¿Cuál es el
problema?
El sistema de detección de ocupantes del asiento del pasajero (PODS)
puede detectar un mal funcionamiento y apagar la bolsa de aire del
pasajero aunque el asiento esté ocupado.
Sin embargo, el sistema de bolsas de aire y la estrategia de advertencia
funcionan según se diseñaron. Si el PODS no funciona correctamente,
se enciende una luz de advertencia en el panel de instrumentos junto
con un sonido de advertencia y aparece un mensaje de error en el
grupo de instrumentos. La luz indicadora de las bolsas de aire muestra
“bolsa de aire del pasajero desactivada”. Este error a menudo se
produce de forma esporádica y durante poco tiempo. Cuando el error
y, en consecuencia, las advertencias desaparecen, la bolsa de aire del
pasajero vuelve a funcionar según lo previsto sin necesidad da alguna
acción o interacción por parte del cliente. En el caso de un choque que

riesgo de lesiones para el ocupante sentado en el asiento del pasajero

¿Qué vamos a
hacer?
Para corregir este defecto, su concesionario autorizado Audi
reemplazará la alfombrilla del sensor del sistema de detección de
ocupantes del asiento del pasajero (PODS) y actualizaremos el módulo
de control del PODS. Este trabajo tardará unas cuatro horas y se
realizará de forma gratuita. Tenga en cuenta que su concesionaria
puede necesitar más tiempo para programar la reparación de acuerdo
con las disponibilidad de las piezas. Probablemente también necesiten
más tiempo para preparar la reparación, así como para ajustar el
cronograma diario del taller.

Si usted es el arrendador y propietario registrado del vehículo que se
identifica en esta acción, la ley requiere que le reenvíe esta carta
inmediatamente por first-class mail al arrendatario en un plazo de diez
(10) días a partir de que la reciba. Si cambió de dirección o vendió el
vehículo, llene la tarjeta prepagada de respuesta del propietario que se
adjunta a esta carta y envíenosla por correo para poder actualizar
nuestros registros.

Issue: The passenger occupant detection system (PODS) may detect a malfunction and switch
off the passenger airbag even though the seat may be occupied.
However, the airbag system and the warning strategy operate as designed. If the PODS
malfunctions, a warning light in the instrument panel comes on together with an acoustic
warning sound and an error message is displayed in the instrument cluster. The airbag
indicator light shows “passenger airbag off”. This error often occurs sporadically and for a
limited amount of time. When the error (and consequently) the warnings disappear, the
passenger airbag works again as intended without any action/interaction necessary by
the customer. In the event of a crash necessitating passenger airbag activation, there
would be an increased risk of injury to the occupant seated in the front passenger seat if
the passenger airbag is switched off/not working.
Repair:  REPAIR AVAILABLE – December 17, 2021 – Replace passenger occupant
detection system (PODS) sensor mat and update the PODS control module.

 Check daily campaign open inventory report or OMD for affected vehicles in

 Repair every affected inventory vehicle before delivery to consumers.

Allocation of Parts: Due to unforseen supply chain constraints, it has become necessary to decrease the
allocation for part number 8V0-963-553-J, starting January 24th.
To identify the change for your specific dealership, please review the 69BY Repair
Projection Tool found in the 69BY campaign circular (published to ELSA and ServiceNet).
We understand the impact this will have on your dealership, but be assured that we are
working to return to the previous allocation levels as soon as possible.
Repair Procedure: The recall repair steps will also be revised early next week to provide directions on what
to do if the reprogramming step is not successful, which only occurs in very rare instances.

asked to ensure that everyone who uses the vehicle has read the owner’s manual and is
familiar with how the PODS works for the front passenger seat.
As designed, in case of a malfunction within the PODS, a warning light in the instrument
panel will come on together with a warning sound and an error message will be displayed
in the instrument cluster (the airbag indicator light shows “passenger airbag off”). If these
warnings appear, Audi recommends that you stop using the front passenger seat and
make arrangements to have the vehicle inspected/repaired at an Audi dealership as soon
as possible.
