Summary
Volkswagen
Group of America, Inc. (Audi
) is recalling certain 2015-2020 Audi
S3 Sedan, A3 Sedan, 2016-2018 A3 Etron, 2017-2020 RS3 Sedan, and 2015-2019 A3 Cabriolet vehicles. The passenger occupant detection system (PODS) may malfunction and switch off the passenger air bag even when the seat is occupied.
Remedy

Check if your Audi has a Recall
Issue
The passenger occupant detection system (PODS) may detect a malfunction and switch off the passenger airbag even though the seat may be occupied.
However, the airbag system and the warning strategy operate as designed. If the PODS malfunctions, a warning light in the instrument panel comes on together with an acoustic warning sound and an error message is displayed in the instrument cluster. The airbag indicator light shows “passenger airbag off”. This error often occurs sporadic and for a limited amount of time. When the error and consequently the warnings disappear, the passenger airbag works again as intended without any action/interaction necessary by the customer. In the event of an accident necessitating passenger airbag activation there would be an increased risk of injury to the occupant seated in the front passenger seat if the passenger airbag is switched off/not working.
Precautions
Audi
has advised that customers can continue driving these vehicles. Customers are asked to ensure that everyone who uses the vehicle has read the owner’s manual and is familiar with how the PODS works for the front passenger seat.
As designed, in case of a malfunction within the PODS, a warning light in the instrument panel will come on together with a warning sound and an error message will be displayed in the instrument cluster (the airbag indicator light shows “passenger airbag off”). If these warnings appear, Audi
recommends that you stop using the front passenger seat and make arrangements to have the vehicle inspected/repaired at an Audi
dealership as soon as possible.

Safety Recall 69BY– Programming Failures
Issue
During the PODS control module programming step using PODS Programmer VWAAUDI69BY, the programming may fail due to a communication interruption (LED flashes red two times).
A loss or change in the 12V power supply to the PODS Programmer will lead to a loss of communication between the PODS Programmer and the PODS control module.
Resolution
After evaluating PODS programming failures, it was discovered that the vehicles 12V outlet power source was not a consistent power source, regardless if a battery maintainer was attached.
Especially on vehicles with a weakened battery. When updating over 1000 PODS control modules using an external 12V power source, there were zero PODS control module failures.
Prior to attempting the programming step outlined in the 69BY work instructions:
- Ensure the PODS Programmer is properly connected to the PODS control module.
- To ensure there is no interruption in the 12V power supply, an external 12V power source (locally sourced) is the preferred method of powering the PODS Programmer. Using the vehicle’s 12V power source increases the risk of PODS programming failures.

IMPORTANT REMINDER ON VEHICLES AFFECTED BY SAFETY & COMPLIANCE RECALLS
New Vehicles in Dealer Inventory: It is a violation of Federal law for a dealer to deliver a new motor vehicle or any new or used item of motor vehicle equipment (including a tire) covered by this notification under a sale or lease until the defect or noncompliance is remedied. By law, dealers must correct, prior to delivery for sale or lease, any vehicle that fails to comply with an applicable Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard or that contains a defect relating to motor vehicle safety.
Pre-Owned Vehicles in Dealer Inventory: Dealers should not deliver any pre-owned vehicles in their inventory which are involved in a safety or compliance recall until the defect has been remedied.
VIN Lookup Visibility – NHTSA safercar.gov and audiusa.com: On or about March 30, 2021, the campaign code will appear for affected vehicles in the VIN lookup tool(s). Customers can check a vehicle’s eligibility for repair under this or any other recall/service campaign by clicking on the Look Up Recalls link at www.audiusa.com and entering the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN).
What is the status of this recall repair?
The recall repair is not yet available.
When will the recall repair be available?
Audi
is currently investigating and developing a repair solution, but currently there is no ETA for repair availability.
Can affected vehicles continue to be driven?
Audi
has advised that customers can continue driving these vehicles. Audi
also advises customers ensure that everyone who uses the vehicle has read the owner’s manual and is familiar with how the PODS works for the front passenger seat.

Subject: Chronology for Volkswagen
Recall 69BY – PODS
Dear Mr. Owens:
Volkswagen
hereby submits the following chronology associated with the subject recall.
Chronology of Defect
June 12, 2019: The Audi
Product Safety Committee makes the determination of a defect and decides a voluntary safety recall (69Z4) for A3 vehicles manufactured between late 2013 and April 2019 due to a possible issue with the Passenger occupant detection system (PODS). The root cause was identified as a widening of the plug-in contacts at the connector underneath the seat that may lead to sporadically loose contacts and incorrect electrical contacting which may cause the PODS to detect a malfunction and switch off the passenger airbag even though the seat may be occupied.
September 2019: Start of campaign 69Z4 with installation of new more robust PODS connector and optimized cable routing.
February 2020: The US market reports cases of PODS malfunctions on vehicles not included in the campaign.
March/April 2020: AUDI
AG becomes aware of new complaints regarding vehicles thad had undergone the 69Z4 campaign repair. Audi
also identified additional complaints via NHTSA’s VOQ system indicating potential issues after the campaign remedy. Audi
began investigating the possible cause.
March – August 2020: Audi
initiated parts collection and analysis as part of the investigation process. Process delays and interruptions occurred due to COVID-19 restrictions. Concurrently, Audi
also began reviewing the remedy procedure used in 69Z4 and investigated whether technician errors may have affected the previous repairs.
September 2020 to February 2021: Continued root cause analysis for claims after campaign and for claims after change in production with frequent updates to the Audi
Product Safety Committee. Analysis of all potential contributing factors, inspection of vehicles, evaluation of statistical data and detailed testing to reproduce errors and understand failure pattern. Despite intense efforts, the faults triggering the error codes, which often only occur sporadically, could not be reproduced and the root cause remains unknown.
During this time period Audi
also continued to monitor the field and to collect field parts for the ongoing investigation.
March 15, 2021: Despite the unknown root cause, based on the number of claims after the previous recall, the Audi
Product Safety Committee believes that an additional issue exists within the PODS system, beyond the issue addressed by campaign 69Z4. Out of an abundance of caution, it was decided to recall all Audi
A3 vehicles built between 2013 and 2020 due to this topic.
Audi
continues to investigate the root cause and failure pattern.
To date, Audi
is unaware of any accidents or injuries related to this issue.
Please contact me if you require any additional information or have any questions related to this information.

IMPORTANT SAFETY RECALL
This notice applies to your vehicle:
NHTSA: 21V198
Audi
Recall: 69BY– Passenger Occupant Detection System (PODS)
INTERIM SAFETY RECALL NOTICE FOR YOUR VEHICLE
A recall repair is not yet available
This notice is sent to you in accordance with the National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act. Audi
has decided
that a defect, which relates to motor vehicle safety, exists in certain Audi
vehicles. Our records show that you are
the owner of a vehicle affected by this action.
About this recall: The passenger occupant detection system (PODS) may detect a malfunction and
switch off the passenger airbag even though the seat may be occupied. However,
the airbag system and the warning strategy operate as designed. If the PODS
malfunctions, a warning light in the instrument panel comes on together with an
acoustic warning sound and an error message is displayed in the instrument cluster.
The airbag indicator light shows “passenger airbag off”. This error often occurs
sporadically and for a limited amount of time. When the error and consequently the
warnings disappear, the passenger airbag works again as intended without any
action/interaction necessary by the customer.
In the event of a crash necessitating passenger airbag activation, there would be an
increased risk of injury to the occupant seated in the front passenger seat if the
passenger airbag is switched off/not working.
A recall repair is not yet
available.
A recall repair is still under investigation and currently being developed. Because of
this, Audi
does not yet have a timeframe in which we advise you to expect the repair
to become available. We will send another letter as soon as the recall work can be
completed on your vehicle.
What you can do now: You can continue driving your vehicle. Please ensure that everyone who uses your
vehicle has read the owner’s manual and is familiar with how the PODS works for
the front passenger seat.
As designed, in case of a malfunction within the PODS, a warning light in the
instrument panel will come on together with a warning sound and an error message
will be displayed in the instrument cluster (the airbag indicator light shows
“passenger airbag off”). If this happens, stop using the front passenger seat and
make arrangements to have the vehicle inspected/repaired at an Audi
dealership as
soon as possible.
Please do not contact your dealer about this recall unless you believe your vehicle
is experiencing the recall condition described in this letter.

Check Campaigns/Actions screen in Elsa on the day of repair to verify that a VIN qualifies for repair under this
action. Elsa is the only valid campaign inquiry & verification source.
Campaign status must show “open.”
If Elsa shows other open action(s), inform your customer so that the work can also be completed at
the same time the vehicle is in the workshop for this campaign.
Problem Description The passenger occupant detection system (PODS) may detect a malfunction and switch off the
passenger airbag even though the seat may be occupied.
However, the airbag system and the warning strategy operate as designed. If the PODS
malfunctions, a warning light in the instrument panel comes on together with an acoustic
warning sound and an error message is displayed in the instrument cluster. The airbag indicator
light shows “passenger airbag off”. This error often occurs sporadically and for a limited amount
of time. When the error (and consequently) the warnings disappear, the passenger airbag works
again as intended without any action/interaction necessary by the customer. In the event of a
crash necessitating passenger airbag activation, there would be an increased risk of injury to
the occupant seated in the front passenger seat if the passenger airbag is switched off/not
working.
Corrective Action Replace passenger occupant detection system (PODS) sensor mat and update the PODS
control module.
Precautions Audi
has advised that customers can continue driving these vehicles. Please ensure that
everyone who uses your vehicle has read the owner’s manual and is familiar with how the PODS
works for the front passenger seat.
As designed, in case of a malfunction within the PODS, a warning light in the instrument panel
will come on together with a warning sound and an error message will be displayed in the
instrument cluster (the airbag indicator light shows “passenger airbag off”). If these warnings
appear, Audi
recommends that you stop using the front passenger seat and make arrangements
to have the vehicle inspected/repaired at an Audi
dealership as soon as possible.

69BY USA
IMPORTANT SAFETY RECALL
This notice applies to your vehicle: ,
NHTSA: 21V198
Subject: Safety Recall 69BY – Passenger Occupant Detection System (PODS)
Dear Audi Owner,
This notice is sent to you in accordance with the National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act.
Audi has decided that a defect, which relates to motor vehicle safety, exists in certain 2015-
2020 model year Audi vehicles. Our records show that you are the owner of a vehicle affected
by this action.
What is the issue? The passenger occupant detection system (PODS) may detect a
malfunction and switch off the passenger airbag even though the seat
may be occupied.
However, the airbag system and the warning strategy operate as
designed. If the PODS malfunctions, a warning light in the instrument
panel comes on together with an acoustic warning sound and an error
message is displayed in the instrument cluster. The airbag indicator
light shows “passenger airbag off”. This error often occurs sporadic and
for a limited amount of time. When the error and consequently the
warnings disappear, the passenger airbag works again as intended
without any action/interaction necessary by the customer. In the event
of a crash necessitating passenger airbag activation there would be an
increased risk of injury to the occupant seated in the front passenger
seat if the passenger airbag is switched off/not working.
What will we do? To correct this defect, your authorized Audi dealer will replace the
passenger occupant detection system (PODS) sensor mat and update
the PODS control module. This work will take about four hours to
complete and will be performed for you free of charge. Please keep in
mind that your dealer will need to schedule your repair based on part
availability. They may also need additional time for the preparation of
the repair, as well as to accommodate their daily workshop schedule.
What should you do? Please contact your authorized Audi dealer without delay to schedule
this recall repair. For your convenience, you can also visit
www.audiusa.com and click on the “Find a Dealer” link to locate a
dealer near you and schedule this service.

IMPORTANT SAFETY RECALL
Precautions you
should take
Audi has advised that customers can continue driving these vehicles.
Please ensure that everyone who uses your vehicle has read the
owner’s manual and is familiar with how the PODS works for the front
passenger seat.
As designed, in case of a malfunction within the PODS, a warning light
in the instrument panel will come on together with a warning sound and
an error message will be displayed in the instrument cluster (the airbag
indicator light shows “passenger airbag off”). If these warnings appear,
Audi recommends that you stop using the front passenger seat and
make arrangements to have the vehicle inspected/repaired at an Audi

IMPORTANTE LLAMADO A REVISIÓN POR SEGURIDAD
<DIRECCIÓN DEL CLIENTE>
<CIUDAD, ESTADO Y CÓDIGO POSTAL DEL CLIENTE>
¿Qué vamos a
hacer?

Repair Available – Safety Recall 69BY / Passenger Occupant Detection System (PODS)
This notice is for: Dealer Principal

Date: December 16, 2021
Issue: The passenger occupant detection system (PODS) may detect a malfunction and switch
off the passenger airbag even though the seat may be occupied.
However, the airbag system and the warning strategy operate as designed. If the PODS
malfunctions, a warning light in the instrument panel comes on together with an acoustic
warning sound and an error message is displayed in the instrument cluster. The airbag
indicator light shows “passenger airbag off”. This error often occurs sporadically and for a
limited amount of time. When the error (and consequently) the warnings disappear, the
passenger airbag works again as intended without any action/interaction necessary by
the customer. In the event of a crash necessitating passenger airbag activation, there
would be an increased risk of injury to the occupant seated in the front passenger seat if
the passenger airbag is switched off/not working.
Repair: REPAIR AVAILABLE – December 17, 2021 – Replace passenger occupant
detection system (PODS) sensor mat and update the PODS control module.
See ELSA/ServiceNet for complete repair & claiming instructions
