The expected failure rate is less than 1% for this Safety Recall. • Some unexpected parts ordering activity was noticed early on with this action. • With guidance and feedback from the field, it was determined that further clarification of the inspection procedure would be useful to help avoid parts ordering in cases where replacement parts are not needed. • Please note: ordering parts for stock will create back orders, unnecessary returns, obsolescence and scrapping. DO NOT order parts unless they are absolutely needed for a repair. Problem Description Individual parts of the front seat backrest adjusting mechanism and the side element of the front seat backrest frame may not have been welded properly. In the event of a rear-end crash, the backrest adjustment could break under unfavorable conditions and the intended restraint effect may no longer be achieved. This may cause an increased risk of injury to the occupant of the front seat and potentially to the occupant in the rear seat directly behind it. Corrective Action Inspect the front driver and passenger seats. If an affected part is found, the seatback frame will be replaced. Code Visibility On or about September 4, 2020, the campaign code was applied to affected vehicles. Owner Notification Owner notification took place in September, 2020. TIP On the date of repair, print this screen and keep a copy with the repair order. • Confirm the Campaign/Action is open <arrow 1>. If the status is closed, no further work is required. • Note the Applicable Criteria ID <arrow 2> for use in determining the correct work to be done and corresponding parts associated. CRITICAL REPAIR STEP STOP! If multiple software update Campaign/Actions are open, they must be performed in order of the Start date <arrow 3>. Section B – Inspecting Seat Frames • The inboard and outboard recline mechanisms must be inspected on both front seats. • The inspection must be done with the seats fully reclined and with the seats in the fully upright position. • Vehicles with power recline seats – Proceed to Sub-section 1. • Vehicles with manual recline seats – Proceed to Sub-section 2. You are checking to see if the gauge passes by the laser welds <1>. NOTE Power backrest shown in the full upright position. The process for both sides on both front seats, in the upright and reclined position is similar. The welds for the power backrest are not exposed. • Fully recline left front and right front seats. September 2020 72K9 Page 11 of 18 Outboard Recline Mechanism (closest to the door): PERFORM THE INSPECTION ON BOTH RECLINE MECHANISMS ON BOTH FRONT SEATS. • Pull back the seat covering to expose the recline mechanism. • Inspect the gap between recline mechanism <1> and mounting bracket <2> in the area shown <between arrows> using the 0.5 mm gauge. • You will be checking for the presence of a complete weld between recline mechanism <1> and backrest frame <2>. • If the 0.5 mm gauge can be fully inserted between the components: o The seat frame must be replaced. WARNING IF THE BACKREST FRAME IS BEING REPLACED, THE VEHICLE MUST NOT BE RETURNED TO THE CUSTOMER UNTIL THE REPLACEMENT HAS BEEN COMPLETED. o Proceed to Section C. • If the 0.5 mm gauge cannot be inserted between the components: o Proceed to the next step. NOTE There may be a chamfer on the power recline mechanism gear. The feeler gauge may pass through the chamfer by 2-3 millimeters. This is normal. You are checking to see if the feeler gauge passes through the laser weld that would be in place. Inboard Recline Mechanism (closest to the center tunnel): • Bring the seats to the fully upright and forward position. Date of determination: August 19, 2020 Amendment 11/2020: October 26, 2020: The PSB in Chattanooga was made aware of front seat recliner weld failure which occurred on a customer vehicle after 3 days in service. The vehicle was manufactured after the “clean VIN” established for the recall campaign, which was decided by the APS in August of 2020. After reviewing the failed part, it was determined that the seat backrest was in-fact manufactured during the suspect timeframe however neither the seat itself nor the vehicle was included in the various sort actions and subsequent recall campaign. This was due to the fact that the Tier I supplier unknowingly provided incorrect information to regarding their in-house sorting activities, which caused the initial identification of potentially affected vehicles to be inaccurate/ incomplete. Suspect population was for Atlas and Atlas Cross Sport. November 05, 2020: Topic presented to the Product Safety Committee. Additional information requested. November 11, 2020: Topic again presented to the Product Safety Committee where the recall decision for the additional Atlas and Atlas Cross Sport vehicles was made (524 vehicles added for USA market). FMVSS 1 : NR FMVSS 2 : NR Description of the Safety Risk : In the event of a rear-end crash, the backrest adjustment could break under unfavorable conditions and the intended restraint effect may no longer be achieved. FOREIGN STATES 78395 Country : Mexico Chronology : July 15, 2020: During an internal road test, noises coming from the backrest were noticed. Immediate investigation regarding root cause and consequences commenced together with the suppliers. It was found that some process weaknesses occurred after the production at the supplier re-started after the shutdown due to COVID-19. July 24, 2020: Topic was reported to Product Safety Committee. Technical analysis continued and potentially affected vehicles were identified. August 19, 2020: The VW and Audi Product Safety Committee decided a worldwide recall. Within the worldwide potentially affected VW and Audi population, 53 vehicles may have received an affected improperly welded backrest. Date of determination: August 19, 2020 Amendment 11/2020: October 26, 2020: The PSB in Chattanooga was made aware of front seat recliner weld failure which occurred on a customer vehicle after 3 days in service. The vehicle was manufactured after the “clean VIN” established for the recall campaign, which was decided by the APS in August of 2020. After reviewing the failed part, it was determined that the seat backrest was in-fact manufactured during the suspect timeframe however neither the seat itself nor the vehicle was included in the various sort actions and subsequent recall campaign. This was due to the fact that the Tier I supplier unknowingly provided incorrect information to regarding their in-house sorting activities, which caused the initial identification of potentially affected vehicles to be inaccurate/ Part 573 Safety Recall Report 20V-505 Page 5 The information contained in this report was submitted pursuant to 49 CFR §573 incomplete. Suspect population was for Atlas and Atlas Cross Sport. November 05, 2020: Topic presented to the Product Safety Committee. Additional information requested. November 11, 2020: Topic again presented to the Product Safety Committee where the recall decision for the additional Atlas and Atlas Cross Sport vehicles was made (524 vehicles added for USA market). Description of Remedy : Description of Remedy Program : At no cost to customers, the front driver and passenger seats will be inspected. If an affected part is found, the seatback frame will be replaced. Neither Audi nor Volkswagen will offer a reimbursement program under this recall because the affected vehicles are still within the factory warranty period. How Remedy Component Differs from Recalled Component : The remedy component(s) have the proper welds present; the recalled components do not. If an affected part is found, a new seatback frame will be installed.
