Disconnect the 12V battery: WARNING Accident risk. When working on pyrotechnic components (such as airbags and belt tensioners), the battery must be disconnected with the ignition switched ON.  Turn the ignition ON.  Access the 12V battery.  Loosen the nut <1>.  Remove and isolate the battery ground cable terminal from the battery pole. Replacing passenger frontal airbag: WARNING Before handling pyrotechnic components (for example, disconnecting the connector), the person handling it must “discharge static electricity”. This can be done by touching the door striker, for example.  Release the connector lock <1> with a small flat-head screwdriver .  Disconnect the connectors <2, 3 and 4> from the Front Passenger Airbag Igniters. December 2022 69DZ Page 10 of 14 CRITICAL REPAIR STEP STOP! The original airbag bolts have strong thread lock applied to them. Remove the bolts using hand tools only. DO NOT use power tools to remove the bolts. Use extreme care when removing the bolts. DO NOT use excessive force/torque when removing the bolts. DO NOT heat the bolts to loosen the thread lock. Clean the threads of the nut inserts using a thread tap before installing the new bolts.  Remove bolts <1> and <2>.  Remove bracket <3>. WARNING Secure the airbag unit from falling.  Remove the bolts <1 and 3>.  Release the locking tabs.  Remove the airbag <2> downward. WARNING Set the airbag down so the airbag fabric faces upward.  Installation is the reverse order of removal.  Torque new bolts <1 and 3> to 8 Nm. Reassemble vehicle:  Reassembly is the reverse order of removal.  Torque -J794- bracket fasteners to 3 Nm.  Torque glove compartment bolts to 3 Nm. December 2022 69DZ Page 12 of 14 Reconnect 12V battery: WARNING Ignition must be ON when connecting battery. If pyrotechnic components (e.g. airbag, belt tensioner) are not repaired correctly, they may deploy unintentionally after connecting battery. There must not be anyone inside the vehicle when connecting the battery.  Disconnect the connector <2> from the Battery Monitoring Control Module -J367- <3>.  Attach the battery ground cable clamp by hand to the battery negative terminal and torque the nut <1> to 6 Nm.  Reconnect the connector to the Battery Monitoring Control Module -J367-.  Activate the convenience one-touch open/close functions.  Check the DTC memories of all the control units and erase under-voltage faults if necessary. In some components, there is also a supply of pressurized gas to ensure this gas is generated  This pressurized gas is stored under high pressure in a compressed gas container. Pyrotechnic components are triggered by electrical/mechanical igniters.  Only trained personnel should perform testing, assembly and servicing work. Airbags do not have a replacement interval.  Never check with test lamps, voltmeter or ohmmeters.  Only check pyrotechnic components when they are installed in the vehicle using vehicle diagnosis, testing and information systems approved by the manufacturer.  When working on pyrotechnic components and the airbag control module, disconnect the battery ground strap while the ignition is switched on. Then cover the negative terminal.  Wait 10 seconds after disconnecting the battery.  The ignition must be SWITCHED ON when connecting the battery. There should not be anyone inside the vehicle when doing this.  Exception: vehicles with batteries in the passenger compartment. In this case, stay outside the range of the airbags and seat belts.  Wash your hands after touching ignited pyrotechnic components from the restraint system.  Do not open or repair pyrotechnic components. Use only new components to reduce the risk of injury.  Do not install pyrotechnic components that have fallen onto a hard surface or show signs of damage.  Discharge static electricity before handling pyrotechnic components, for example before disconnecting the electrical connector. This can be done by touching grounded metal objects such as the door striker pin.  Install pyrotechnic components immediately after removing them from their transport packaging. FMVSS 1 : NR FMVSS 2 : NR Description of the Safety Risk : In the event of a crash the airbag might not unfold as designed. As a result, this could cause the airbag to tear and also allow the expanding gas to exit through this tear. The performance of the airbag might not be as designed, increasing the risk of injury. Description of the Cause : Due to deviation in the automatic folding process of the airbag, the airbag might not be folded accordingly to manufacturing specification. Part 573 Safety Recall Report 22V-652 Page 3 The information contained in this report was submitted pursuant to 49 CFR §573 Identification of Any Warning that can Occur : none Involved Components : Component Name 1 : airbag module Component Description : front-passenger airbag module Component Part Number : 8Y1880204 D Supplier Identification : Component Manufacturer Name : Autoliv Airbags Poland Address : ulica Belgijska 2 Jelcz-Laskowice Foreign States 55-220 Country : Poland Chronology : March 04, 2022: While performing a serial monitoring / conformity of production test for the instrument panel at very low-temperature it was discovered that the airbag was torn after deployment. March – April 2022: An expert meeting between Audi AG and the supplier was scheduled immediately and it was decided to repeat the test 8 times to investigate the reasons for this incident. These tests were carried out, but showed no failures and also the monitoring data of the production process showed no deviations. After this, 120 airbags already produced were checked and deviations within the folding of the airbag were discovered. As a result, an additional monitoring step was introduced in production in March 18, 2022. May – July 2022: A testing program was carried out with airbags that were deliberately not folded according to specification to verify the impact on the restraint performance. Different sized dummies were used in crash tests with varying position within the seat. Material analyses of the airbags were carried out and another 600 airbags in stock were checked for deviation in the folding. The topic was submitted to the Audi Product Safety Committee and the affected scope of vehicles in the field was verified. August 22, 2022: The Audi Product Safety Committee decides a voluntary safety recall. Audi is not aware of any warranty claims or customer claims due to this issue. Audi will not offer a reimbursement plan under this recall. How Remedy Component Differs from Recalled Component : The recalled component is the front-passenger airbag module with the part number 8Y1880204 D from the affected production period. The remedy component has the same part number, but has been produced with an optimized production process. Identify How/When Recall Condition was Corrected in Production : Vehicles produced after April 28, 2022 have been built with airbag modules that have been assembled using an additional monitoring step for the folding process of the airbag.
