Materials. FMVSS 1 : 302 – Flammability of interior materials FMVSS 2 : NR Description of the Safety Risk : The burn rate of the material may sometimes be beyond the maximum allowable limit. In the unlikely case of a fire inside of the vehicle, this may increase risk of injury to the vehicle occupants. Description of the Cause : The root cause is currently not known. Identification of Any Warning that can Occur : None Part 573 Safety Recall Report 23V-750 Page 2 The information contained in this report was submitted pursuant to 49 CFR §573 Involved Components : Component Name 1 : Roller Sunshade Component Description : Roller Sunshade under panoramic glass roof Component Part Number : 11K 877 042 6PS Supplier Identification : Component Manufacturer Name : Automotive Mexico Body Systems Address : Autopista de Cuota Mexico Puebla Km 117 Cuautlancingo Foreign States 72710 Country : Mexico Chronology : May 2023: internal CoP tests (Conformity of Production) resulted in not OK tests. Supplier contacted for clarification. June – August 2023: Intensive testing conducted. Analysis together with supplier and other laboratories. Due to Inconsistent test results no root cause identified. Test setup discussed. September 08, 2023: Topic presented to the Volkswagen Product Safety Committee. The material had always shown passing test results in the laboratory used by the supplier and therefore indicated to be compliant with FMVSS 302. The Committee issued a task for additional technical clarification and evaluation of options. November 01, 2023: Topic presented to the Volkswagen Product Safety Committee again. Out of an abundance of caution, due to inconsistent test results, a noncompliance recall was decided because the interior sunshade covering the panoramic glass roof may not consistently meet the requirements of FMVSS 302. No field complaints known. Description of Remedy : Description of Remedy Program : At no cost to customers, dealers will apply a fabric flame retardant onto the material of the roller sunshade. Because the affected vehicles are within the New Vehicle Limited Warranty period, Volkswagen will not offer a reimbursement plan under this recall. The built-in roller sunshade will be treated with a fabric flame retardent. Identify How/When Recall Condition was Corrected in Production : On August 01, 2023, the recall condition was resolved in production by reorienting the material in a manner that has consistently better performance. The material was reversed so that the exterior side faces the interior. Materials. In a fire, fabric that doesn’t meet flammability requirements could increase the risk of injury. Repair: • REPAIR NOT YET AVAILABLE • Check daily campaign open inventory report or OMD for affected vehicles in inventory. • Volkswagen is working to make a recall remedy available as soon as possible for the affected vehicles. Dealers and owners will be notified in writing once the recall remedy work can be performed.
