Summary
Volkswagen
Group of America, Inc. (Audi
) is recalling certain 2022-2024 RS e-tron GT, e-tron GT, Q4 e-tron Sportback, Q4 e-tron, 2020-2021 Audi
A8, 2019-2024 e-tron Quattro, 2020-2024 e-tron Sportback Quattro, Q5, and 2021-2022 A7 vehicles. When using the industrial 220V/240V plug at the 100% charge setting, some home power outlets may be incapable of handling the electrical current required to utilize the compact charging system, causing the outlet or charging cable to overheat.
Remedy
Owners are advised not to use the 220V/240V compact/portable charging cable and only use the 110V home charging cable or public charging stations. Dealers will supply a new 220V/240V compact/portable charging cable with an incorporated temperature sensor, free of charge. Interim owner notification letters explaining the safety risk are expected to be mailed February 9, 2024. A second notice will be sent once remedy parts become available, anticipated mid-2024. Owners may contact Audi
customer service at 1-800-253-2834. Audi
’s numbers for this recall are 93U6 and 93U8.
Notes
Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or go to www.nhtsa.gov.

Chronology of Defect
September 2020: Audi
became aware of cases where melting/overheating occurred at the industrial socket (NEMA 14-50) when charging with the industrial 220V/240V plug with 40 amperes.
October 2020 – December 2021: Audi
requested parts from the field and analyzed the patterns and surrounding circumstances of customer charging behavior. All analyzed cases did not show any issues with the vehicle and the delivered charging equipment itself. The root cause always appeared to be household power outlets and/or household wiring/circuit breakers incapable of handling the required electrical current.
All investigations showed that the power outlets and/or wiring may be incapable of handling the required electrical current, if the proper electrical requirements are not met. In this case use of the compact charging system with improper or overburdened 220V power outlets and wiring may, in certain circumstances, lead to a risk of overheating of the home infrastructure.
Therefore, Audi
decided to implement a service campaign where customers were sent detailed instructions and asked to bring the charging equipment to an Audi
dealer to change the setting on the charging system control unit to 50% power level for the industrial plug and attach a warning label to the control unit of the Audi
compact charging system. With these measures, it is still possible to charge at a charging current of 100% by pressing the button (100%) on the control unit if customers have assured that their home power supply meets all the requirements for safely charging the high-voltage battery at a current rating of 40 amperes.
February 2022 – November 2023: Field monitoring continued and Audi
continued to receive reports of overheated and melted sockets.
December 6, 2023: A re-evaluation based on the field situation determined that a misuse still cannot be ruled out even with the additional warning instructions and the previous service campaign. Out of an abundance of caution, Audi
determined it would supersede its existing service campaign and conduct a safety recall to replace the affected charging cables by a new charging cable with incorporated temperature sensors. In unsold vehicles the industrial charging cable will be removed from the charging equipment before delivery.
Audi
is currently aware of 615 claims, dating from 08/05/2020 – 12/05/2023, and no fires, crashes or injuries potentially related to this issue.

Dear Ms. Carlson: Volkswagen
hereby submits the following chronology associated with the subject recall. Chronology of Defect September 2020: Audi
became aware of cases where melting/overheating occurred at the industrial socket (NEMA 14-50) when charging with the industrial 220V/240V plug with 40 amperes.
January 2022: A service campaign was launched and Volkswagen
Group of America presented the topic to NHTSA during its regular Quarterly Meeting with the Office of Defects Investigation.

Description of the Defect : Audi
has become aware of cases where melting/overheating occurred at the industrial socket (NEMA 14 50) when charging with the industrial 220V/240V plug with 40 amperes. All analyzed cases did not show any issues with the charging equipment itself, the root cause always appeared to be household power outlets and/or household wiring/circuit breaker incapable of handling the required electrical current. Should the proper electrical requirements not be met, the power outlets and/or wiring may be
incapable of handling the required electrical current. In this case use of the compact charging system
with improper or overburdened 220V power outlets and wiring may, in certain circumstances, lead to a
risk of overheating of the home infrastructure. In general, the Audi
e tron compact charging system can be used for charging at household and industrial sockets. The recall only affects charging with the industrial 220V/240V plug, the charging unit itself and the 110V household charging cable are not affected.

An interim customer letter is planned for early January 2024 informing customers impacted by this recall. Is the repair available?
No. At this time, the repair is not available. We expect the recall remedy to be available by mid-2024. Audi will send customers another letter once the recall remedy is available. Can customers continue to use the 220V/240V adapter cable?
As a precaution, customers will be instructed not to use the 220V/240V compact/portable charging cable at the 100% charge setting until the recall remedy has been completed. Customers may continue to use this cable only if it is set to the 50% charge setting. Please see owner’s manual for full information on the Compact Charging System and charging the vehicle. How do customers change the setting to 50%?
The vehicle owner’s manual contains important information about charging the vehicle. We encourage anyone who drives the vehicle to review the owner’s manual to become familiar with this important information. Is there support for customers waiting for the 93U6 repair similar to what is offered for 93U8?
No. Customers can continue to use the 220V/240V cable at the 50% charge setting or charge their vehicle using public charge stations. Customers also have the 110V charging option, as the compact/portable charging unit and 110V home charging cable are not affected by this recall. We have a lease return/trade/dealer demo with 93U6. Can we remove the 220V/240V cable to sell the vehicle?
No. The repair remedy for 93U6 is not yet available. Dealers should not deliver any pre- owned vehicles in their inventory that are involved in a safety or compliance recall until the defect has been remedied. Notes:
