Curtain Air Bag May Not Deploy Properly/FMVSS 226
In the event of a crash necessitating deployment of the head curtain air bag, if the air bag does not deploy properly, the vehicle occupants have an increased risk of injury.
Summary
Volkswagen Group of America, Inc. (Volkswagen) is recalling certain 2018 Audi A5 Coupe vehicles. The affected vehicles were built with head curtain air bag assemblies that may not unfold properly. As such, these vehicle fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 226, “Ejection Mitigation.”
Remedy
Audi will notify owners, and dealers will modify the head curtain air bags so that they deploy properly, free of charge. The recall is expected to begin January 31, 2018. Owners may contact Audi customer service at 11-800-253-2834. Volkswagen’s number for this recall is 69T7.

Audi has notified NHTSA about the upcoming compliance recall described in this letter.

| RECALL DESCRIPTION | A head curtain airbag may not unfold properly from the A-pillar during deployment. In a crash where the head curtain airbag deploys, this may result in reduced airbag protection and could increase the risk of injury to vehicle occupants. This makes the head curtain airbags noncompliant with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 226 – Ejection Mitigation. |
| CORRECTIVE ACTION | As with any safety/compliance recall, affected vehicles in dealer inventory are on mandatory stop-sale hold until this recall repair has been performed.
Under this recall, dealers will remove excess fabric from the head curtain airbags, along with the paper sleeve on the upper part of the A-pillar.
Repair information will be provided to dealers when parts and repair instructions become available to support this recall. |

New Vehicles in Dealer Inventory: It is a violation of Federal law for a dealer to deliver a new motor vehicle or any new or used item of motor vehicle equipment (including a tire) covered by this notification under a sale or lease until the defect or noncompliance is remedied. By law, dealers must correct, prior to delivery for sale or lease, any vehicle that fails to comply with an applicable Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard or that contains a defect relating to motor vehicle safety.
Pre-Owned Vehicles in Dealer Inventory: Dealers should not deliver any pre-owned vehicles in their inventory which are involved in a safety or compliance recall until the defect has been remedied.
