August 22, 2019 NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 19V615000

Key May Be Removed When Not In Park

Removing the key while the shift lever is in a position other than “Park” increases the risk of an unintended vehicle rollaway that may result in personal injury or a crash.

NHTSA Campaign Number: 19V615

Manufacturer Volkswagen Group of America, Inc.

Components STEERING, ELECTRICAL SYSTEM

Potential Number of Units Affected 679,027

Summary

Volkswagen Group of America, Inc. (Volkswagen) is recalling certain 2015-2019 GTI, 2015-2016 and 2018-2019 Golf, 2012-2019 Beetle and Beetle Convertible, 2017-2019 Golf SportWagen and 2011-2018 Jetta vehicles equipped with an automatic transmission, manual handbrake and keyless entry. A build-up of silicate on the shift lever micro switch contacts may enable the key to be removed from the ignition when the transmission shift lever is not in “Park.”

Remedy

Volkswagen will notify owners, and dealers will install an additional switch and circuit board, free of charge. The recall began November 19, 2019. Owners may contact Volkswagen customer service at 1-800-893-5298. Volkswagen’s number for this recall is 37M2.

Notes

Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or go to www.safercar.gov.

Check Campaigns/Actions screen in Elsa on the day of repair to verify that a VIN qualifies for repair under this action.  Elsa is the only valid campaign inquiry & verification source.

  • Campaign status must show “open.”
  • If Elsa shows other open action(s), inform your customer so that the work can also be completed at the same time the vehicle is in the workshop for this campaign.
Problem Description Over time, a build-up of silicate on the shift lever micro switch contacts can result in an isolationlike layer that may be interpreted as an open micro switch.  This open switch normally indicates that the shift lever is in “P” park position. If the build-up happens, it may be possible to remove the key from the ignition switch without the shift lever being in the “P” park position because the system is unable to recognize that the vehicle is not in “P” park.  This makes the vehicle noncompliant with FMVSS and CMVSS 114; Theft protection and rollaway prevention.

If the ignition key is removed without the shift lever being in “P” Park position, there is a risk that the vehicle may roll away, resulting in a crash that could injure people and damage property.

Corrective Action Install an additional switch and circuit board.
Precautions If this condition is present in the vehicle, an audible warning sound and failure message may appear in instrument cluster while the vehicle is in motion, due to the micro switch failure (a nonexistent “P” Park shift lever position is incorrectly detected). If this happens, owners are advised to contact an authorized Volkswagen dealer immediately and make arrangements to have the vehicle inspected.

Owners are advised to always set the parking brake and follow the parking instructions as described in the vehicle owner’s manual before removing the ignition key.

Subject:

Compliance Recall 37M2 – Shift Lever Micro Switch
Certain 2011-2019 Model Year Volkswagen Vehicles

Dear Volkswagen Owner,

This notice is sent to you in accordance with the National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act. Volkswagen has decided that certain 2011-2019 model year Volkswagen vehicles fail to conform to 49 CFR § 571.114 – Standard No. 114; Theft protection and rollaway prevention. Our records show that you are the owner of a vehicle affected by this action.

What is the issue? Over time, a build-up of silicate on the shift lever micro switch contacts can result in an isolation-like layer that may be interpreted as an open micro switch.  This open switch normally indicates that the shift lever is in “P” park position. If the build-up happens, it may be possible to remove the key from the ignition switch without the shift lever being in the “P” park position because the system is unable to recognize that the vehicle is not in “P” park.  This makes the vehicle noncompliant with regulatory requirements.

If the ignition key is removed without the shift lever being in “P” Park position, there is a risk that the vehicle may roll away, resulting in a crash that could injure people and damage property.

What will we do? To correct this noncompliance, your authorized Volkswagen dealer will install an additional switch and circuit board.  This work will take about an hour to complete and will be performed for you free of charge. Please keep in mind that your dealer may need additional time for the preparation of the repair, as well as to accommodate their daily workshop schedule.
What should you do? Please contact your authorized Volkswagen dealer without delay to schedule this recall repair.  To set up an appointment online, please visit www.vw.com/find-a-dealer.
Precautions you should take If this condition is present in the vehicle, an audible warning sound and failure message may appear in instrument cluster while the vehicle is in motion, due to the micro switch failure (a non-existent “P” Park shift lever position is incorrectly detected). If this happens, owners are advised to contact an authorized Volkswagen dealer immediately and make arrangements to have the vehicle inspected.

Owners are advised to always set the parking brake and follow the parking instructions as described in the vehicle owner’s manual before removing the ignition key.

Lease vehicles and address changes If you are the lessor and registered owner of the vehicle identified in this action, the law requires you to forward this letter immediately via first-class mail to the lessee within ten (10) days of receipt.

Advance Notice – Compliance Recall 37M2 / Shift Lever Micro Switch

This notice is for:

Date: August 23, 2019
Issue: Over time, a build-up of silicate on the shift lever micro switch contacts can result in an isolation-like layer that may be interpreted as an open micro switch.  This open switch normally indicates that the shift lever is in “P” park position. If the build-up happens, it may be possible to remove the key from the ignition switch without the shift lever being in the “P” park position because the system isn’t able to recognize that the vehicle is not in “P” park.  This makes the vehicle noncompliant with FMVSS 114; Theft protection and rollaway prevention.

If the ignition key is removed without the shift lever being in “P” Park position, there is a risk that the vehicle may roll away, resulting in a crash that could injure people and damage property.

Repair:
  • REPAIR NOT YET AVAILABLE
  • Check daily campaign open inventory report or ELSA Pro for affected vehicles in inventory
  • Repair every affected inventory vehicle before delivery to consumers.
Parts: Due to the large number of vehicles involved as well as a limited supply of replacement parts, parts required for this campaign WILL BE ALLOCATED until sufficient inventory has been established. Details regarding the initial allocation as well as the replenishment methodology are being developed and will be communicated prior to launch.
Precautions: If this condition is present in the vehicle, an audible warning sound and failure message may appear in instrument cluster while the vehicle is in motion, due to the micro switch failure (a non-existent “P” Park shift lever position is incorrectly detected). If this happens, owners are advised to contact an authorized Volkswagen dealer immediately and make arrangements to have the vehicle inspected.

Until the recall repair is available, owners are advised to always set the parking brake and ensure that the vehicle is in “P” Park before removing the ignition key.
