July 24, 2019 NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 19V547000
Passenger Air Bag May Switch Off/FMVSS 208
A disabled passenger air bag increases the risk of injury in the event of a crash.
NHTSA Campaign Number: 19V547
Manufacturer Volkswagen Group of America, Inc.
Components AIR BAGS
Potential Number of Units Affected 144,092
Summary
Volkswagen Group of America, Inc. (Audi) is recalling certain 2018 Audi S5 Cabriolet, S5 Sportback, S5 Coupe, S4 Sedan, A5 Cabriolet, A5 Sportback and A5 Coupe and 2017-2018 A4 Sedan and A4 Allroad vehicles. Oxidation on the Passenger Occupant Detection System (PODS) connecting cable may cause the software to misdiagnose a malfunction and disable the passenger air bag.
Remedy
Audi will notify owners, and dealers will install cable ties to the harness, free of charge. The recall began September 9, 2019. Owners may contact Volkswagen customer service at 1-800-893-5298. Audi’s number for this recall is 74D9.
Notes
Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or go to www.safercar.gov.

Problem Description | In certain cases, the aluminum shielding on the PODS harness under the seat may not be fitted tight enough to the harness which may allow partial surface corrosion in that area which causes a mostly sporadic error code to occur. As designed, the passenger occupant detection system (PODS) switches off the passenger airbag if a malfunction is detected. In the event of a crash there would be an increased risk of injury to the occupant seated in the front passenger seat if the passenger airbag is switched off/not working.
Corrective Action | Cable ties will be applied at two different points of the harness under the seat which tightens the fit of the aluminum shielding and will interrupt the partial surface oxidation inside the harness and assures the electrical connection.
Precautions | Should a malfunction occur, vehicle occupants will be alerted of a PODS system problem by illumination of the airbag warning light, an acoustic warning sound, an error message displayed in the instrument cluster and by the status of the Passenger Airbag OFF indicator light. If this happens, the customer should contact an authorized Audi dealership for inspection/repair without delay.

Subject: Amended 74D9 Safety Recall Chronology (19V-S47)
Dear Ms. Rice:
Volkswagen is voluntarily submitting the amended chronology for the Audi 74D9 Safety Recall in this additional manner due to character limitations in the provided field for this information in the NHTSA Portal. It should be noted that Volkswagen submitted this amended information in the portal on time on August 07, 2019 by splitting the information between the “Chronology of Defect” field and the “Manufacturer Comments to NHTSA Staff” field similar to previous submissions. Please see the amended subject chronology below.
May/June 2017: Increased amount of field reports regarding replacements of the passenger occupant detection system. Analysis and investigation was started together in cooperation with supplier.
June 2017 – August 2018: During the analysis of field parts (seats) at Audi and IEE facilities in all cases the error could not be reproduced or was not active during analysis. Additional analysis of field cases in the US (with seats still in vehicle) together with the supplier. Root cause could still not clearly be identified. Further testing regarding possible influences and root cause. Error could finally be duplicated temporarily but root cause could still not be determined. After it became clear that a partial surface oxidation inside the connecting cable seems to be a factor, testing for field solution was started.
August 2018: After testing was completed and effectiveness was confirmed, field solution was implemented with a technical bulletin (dealer should wrap the cable with a zip-tie in order to interrupt the partial surface oxidation of the electrical shielding inside the cable harness).
October 2018: Topic was reported to the Audi Product Safety Committee due to further increase in field reports.
November 2018 – April 2019: Further analysis was tasked regarding the difference in field reports across the models and possible influences.
May 2019 – July 2019: Confirmation that the self-diagnosis software in certain models is too sensitive in case of surface oxidation on the electrical shielding of the cable. It still remains unclear at this point though how the issue develops and why certain vehicles/models/model years show a higher claim rate than others and why some vehicles do not show any problems.
July 17, 2019: Although the issue and possible factors are still not fully understood, the Audi Product Safety Committee makes the determination of a defect and decides a safety recall for A4/AS vehicles equipped with the BodySense3 system and the affected software version produced until July 31st, 2018.Audi continues to investigate the topic.
July 31, 2019: Continued discussion in APS, decision regarding remedy was amended.
Sincerely,

Reprogramming
Overview – Introduction
The Immobilizer is a theft-deterrent device that adds a layer of security to VWGoA vehicles that include the following brands: Audi, Bentley, Lamborghini, and VW. Certain repairs such as replacing emission parts cannot be performed without resetting the immobilizer code for the vehicle. This is done by a technician using the VAS for PC software to synchronize the immobilizer code embedded in the ignition key with other codes resident on parts such as the Transmission Control Module, Engine Control Module, and Instrument Cluster.
Before you can replace an emission part
Whenever you replace an emission-related control module, the immobilizer must be reset using the VAS for PC software. This can only be done if you meet the following requirements:
- You have enrolled into the program (see step 1 - Complete Pass Thru Enrollment Forms)
- You have received an email from VWGoA that contains a Security ID and Password to access the immobilizer application hosted in Germany
- You have received an email from VWGoA that contains a certificate file (e.g. IndepeDeale.30001.300999.pfx)
- You have installed the certificate onto your PC
- You have obtained a J 2534-1 Pass Thru device (see recommended J 2534-1 Pass Thru devices)
- You have performed the steps outlined in VAS for PC Setup
Recommended J 2534-1 Pass Thru devices
Pass thru devices are available for purchase from a recommended Manufacturer for registered workshops to perform Immobilizer functions. The Pass Thru devices that have been tested to work with VAS for PC follow:
