Tire Failure may Cause Sudden Air Loss
Over cured tires may develop a break in the sidewall, resulting in sudden air loss or belt edge separation which could lead to tread/belt loss. Either condition can cause a loss of vehicle control, increasing the risk of a crash.

Summary
Volkswagen Group of America, Inc. (Volkswagen
) is recalling certain 2018-2019 Atlas vehicles equipped with Continental tires. On the affected vehicles, it is possible that one or more tires were cured for too long during tire production.
Remedy
Volkswagen will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the tires, and replace them as necessary, free of charge. The recall began on March 24, 2021. Owners may contact Volkswagen
customer service at 1-800-893-5298. Volkswagen
’s number for this recall is 44R1.

Issue:
Vehicles included in this recall may have received potentially affected “overcured” Continental brand tires out of specific production lots. Problem Description
Vehicles included in this recall may have received potentially affected “overcured” Continental brand tires out of specific production lots. The potentially affected tires may experience a carcass break in the sidewall with sudden air loss, or could develop a belt edge separation that could lead to a partial or full tread/belt loss. Sudden loss of tire air pressure without warning may cause loss of vehicle control, increasing the risk of a crash.

Repair Overview
NOTE
If tire(s) require replacement, tire ordering, returning defective tires and reimbursement of mounting and balancing the tire(s) will handled through the dealer’s tire vendor, distributor or Representative of the Tire Manufacturer.
NOTE
- These repair instructions may differ from the labor operations and labor times listed in ELSA.
- Damages resulting from improper repair or failure to follow these work instructions are the dealer’s responsibility and are not eligible for reimbursement under this action.
- This procedure must be read in its entirety prior to performing the repair.
- Due to variations in vehicle equipment and options, the steps/illustrations in this work procedure may not identically match all affected vehicles.
- Diagnosis and repair of pre-existing conditions in the vehicle are not covered under this action.
- When working during extreme temperatures, it is recommended that the vehicle be allowed to acclimate inside the shop to avoid temperature-related component damage/breakage.
Repair Instruction
Section A – Check for Previous Repair
TIP
If Campaign Completion label is present, no further work is required.
- Enter the VIN in Elsa and proceed to the “Campaign/Action” screen.
TIP
On the date of repair, print this screen and keep a copy with the repair order.
- Confirm the Campaign/Action is open <arrow 1>. If the status is closed, no further work is required.
- Note the Applicable Criteria ID <arrow 2> for use in determining the correct work to be done and corresponding parts associated.
CRITICAL REPAIR STEP

If multiple software update Campaign/Actions are open, they must be performed in order of the Start date <arrow 3>. The oldest should be performed first.
- All Safety Recalls must be completed prior to completing this campaign.
- Proceed to Section B.
Section B – Tire Inspection
- All four tires must be inspected and all tire sets associated with the vehicle must be inspected (For example, if snow tires were installed, customers should bring the other tire set as well).
- The DOT number and mold number should be visible on the outside facing sidewall. If not, the vehicle may need to be lifted on the hoist.
- With the DOT number in the 12:00 position, the mold number can be found in the highlighted area as shown, near the tire bead.

Affected tires on Volkswagen models under this action are:

- 245/60R18 105T Continental Cross Contact LX Sport
- If the DOT number, DOT date and mold number match the chart below, the tire must be replaced.
- If all four tires are not affected:

- If any tire is affected:

Section C – Replacing Tires
- If a single tire is replaced on one axle (front or rear), check the tread depth of the tire on the opposite side on the same axle:
- If the difference in tread depth is more than 2mm, the tire must be replaced.
- If a total of two tires are replaced, they must be installed on the same axle.
- Replace and balance the tires in accordance to your dealership’s tire changing equipment.
- Follow all necessary safety guidelines in accordance to your dealership’s tire changing and wheel balancer equipment.
- Inflate tires according to the “Tire and Loading Information” label located on the B-pillar.
- Torque wheel bolts to 120 Nm.

- Fill out and affix Campaign Completion Label, part number CAMP 010 000, next to the vehicle emission control information label.

Ensure Campaign Completion Label does not cover any existing label(s).

Section E – Tire Disabling and Return
- Federal regulations require all recalled tires to be completely disabled within 24 hours of removal.
- On each recalled tire, cut one or two beads completely through in two places 180 degrees apart; or make one or more 6” (minimum length) circumferential cut in one sidewall or shoulder completely through the carcass. This procedure should be performed at the mid-sidewall area away from the TIN number, and only after the tire is dismounted from the wheel/rim.
- Additional information can be found from the tire vendor.
- Return shipping labels and return directions will be provided by the tire vendor.

Continental Tire the Americas, LLC (“CTA”) announced a voluntary recall involving 3,232 Volkswagen passenger tires identified as being fitted OE to Volkswagen
Atlas vehicles, after discovering the affected tires may experience a carcass break in the sidewall with sudden air loss or could develop a belt edge separation which could lead to a partial or full tread/belt loss. These conditions could increase the risk of serious injury or death. Tires may experience a sudden air loss without warning while others may exhibit visible localized tread wear which may manifest as excessive vibration and/or bulging in the tread area.
Tires have been identified as being fitted as original equipment, to the 2018 and 2019 Volkswagen Atlas.
1. What to do when tires meeting the recall criteria are found on a vehicle
1. Contact Continental Tire Customer Relations at 1-888-799-2168 for an authorization number once the tires have been identified by mold and DOT numbers, the tread depth deltas as mentioned in point 3 below have been checked and the vehicle VIN is available.
2. All tire(s) on a vehicle, identified as being part of and or meeting the requirements in this notice require an authorization number. This authorization number is required as part of the tire data when returning the tire through Dealer Tire.
3. Should the tread depth difference between the new replacement tire and the existing tire on the vehicle on the opposite side of the same axle be more than 2mm, Volkswagen requires the opposite tire on the same axle must also be replaced.
3. Return the tires through the Dealer Tire warranty system.
4. Claims to be filed via the “Recall” tile in the Product Support Hub.
5. Please have RO information available to enter into the Product Support Hub.
6. Under “comments”, write (1) “RECALL CAMPAIGN 21T001 – enter the mold number : (2) Write the authorization number provided by Continental in step 1. (3) Note if the tire is a recall or a companion tire from the opposite side of the axle noted in point 3 above (4) The Vehicle VIN is required.
7. Fill out the claim form in its entirety and submit your claim.
8. Tires must have the SKU, DOT, MOLD NUMBER and AUTHORIZATION NUMBER associated with this recall to be warrantable.
9. Physically write on the tire tread “Recall” (if the tires removed meet the recall criteria) OR “Recall Companion” if the tire is removed from the opposite side of the same axle and is removed due to the 2mm tread depth delta in point 3 above.

2. Identifying Tires by DOT, DOT DATE and Mold number
2.1. Subject Tires
The subject tires were sold, as original equipment tires to Volkswagen and were fitted to the Volkswagen
Atlas. Please ensure that the full-size spare tire is included in the inspection process if applicable to the vehicle.
The tires must match the DOT, DOT Date and mold number in order to be part of the recall:
1. DOT serial number, also known as the Tire Identification Number, or TIN, found on the sidewall of each tire.
2. Mold number – 6-digit number in (S-XXXXXX) on the sidewall. The “S-“ may or may not be on the Mold depending on article.
3. The list of affected to DOT, DOT Date and Mold Numbers are shown below.
Tires made for use in the United States are required to have the DOT serial number with production week and year on one sidewall of the tire near the rim. The first sample below shows a tire manufactured during the 7th week of 2019. The second example shows a tire manufactured in the 16th week of 2018.

In addition, a $20 mounting and balancing fee per valid recall tire will also be provided through Dealer Tire for tires verified as meeting the recall requirements. Continental Tire need to receive the tires removed from vehicles for verification through the Dealer Tire warranty process, outlined in Section 2. Section B – Tire Inspection
All four tires must be inspected and all tire sets
associated with the vehicle must be inspected
(For example, if snow tires were installed,
customers should bring the other tire set as
well).
The DOT number and mold number should be
visible on the outside facing sidewall. If not, the
vehicle may need to be lifted on the hoist.
With the DOT number in the 12:00 position,
the mold number can be found in the
highlighted area as shown, near the tire bead.

Section C – Replacing Tires
If a single tire is replaced on one axle (front
or rear), check the tread depth of the tire on
the opposite side on the same axle:
o If the difference in tread depth is more
than 2mm, the tire must be replaced.
If a total of two tires are replaced, they must
be installed on the same axle.
Replace and balance the tires in accordance
to your dealership’s tire changing equipment.
Follow all necessary safety guidelines in
accordance to your dealership’s tire changing
and wheel balancer equipment.
Inflate tires according to the “Tire and Loading
Information” label located on the B-pillar.
Torque wheel bolts to 120 Nm.

Section E – Tire Disabling and Return
Federal regulations require all recalled tires to be completely disabled within 24 hours of removal.
On each recalled tire, cut one or two beads completely through in two places 180 degrees apart; or make
one or more 6” (minimum length) circumferential cut in one sidewall or shoulder completely through the
carcass. This procedure should be performed at the mid-sidewall area away from the TIN number, and only
after the tire is dismounted from the wheel/rim.

Estimado propietario de un Volkswagen:
Le enviamos este aviso de conformidad con la Ley Nacional de Seguridad del Tráfico y Vehículos
Motorizados. Volkswagen determinó que hay un defecto relacionado con la seguridad de los vehículos
motorizados en ciertos vehículos Volkswagen modelo 2018-2020. Nuestros registros muestran que usted
es propietario de un vehículo afectado por esta acción.
¿Cuál es el problema? Los vehículos incluidos en este llamado a revisión pueden tener neumáticos
posiblemente “sobrecurados” de lotes de producción específicos de la marca
Continental. En los neumáticos posiblemente afectados, el caso en la pared
lateral se puede romper y, en consecuencia, puede haber una pérdida
repentina de aire, o pueden desarrollar una separación del borde de la
correa que podría provocar la pérdida total o parcial de la banda de rodadura
o de la correa. La pérdida repentina de la presión de aire de los neumáticos
sin previo aviso puede provocar que se pierda el control del vehículo, lo cual
aumenta el riesgo de un choque.

afectado(s). La inspección tomará aproximadamente media hora. Si es
necesario reemplazar el (los) neumático(s), el proceso puede tardar hasta
dos horas. Este trabajo se realizará de forma gratuita. Tenga en cuenta que

Issue: Vehicles included in this recall may have received potentially affected “overcured”
Continental brand tires out of specific production lots. The potentially affected tires may
experience a carcass break in the sidewall with sudden air loss, or could develop a belt
edge separation that could lead to a partial or full tread/belt loss. Sudden loss of tire air
pressure without warning may cause loss of vehicle control, increasing the risk of a crash.
Repair: REPAIR AVAILABLE – March 19, 2021 / Inspect and, if necessary, replace
affected tire(s)
See ELSA/ServiceNet for complete repair & claiming instructions
Check both the daily Campaign Open Inventory report and OMD for affected
vehicles in inventory. Verify OPEN status in ELSA on the day of repair.
Repair every affected inventory vehicle before delivery to consumers.

this notification under a sale or lease until the defect or noncompliance is remedied. By law,
dealers must correct, prior to delivery for sale or lease, any vehicle that fails to comply with an
applicable Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard or that contains a defect relating to motor
vehicle safety.
Pre-Owned Vehicles in Dealer Inventory: Dealers should not deliver any pre-owned vehicles in
their inventory which are involved in a safety or compliance recall until the defect has been
remedied.
