October 7, 2022 NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 22V753000
Damaged Connecting Rod Bearings
A damaged engine can result in engine failure and a stall, increasing the risk of a crash. If the engine failure causes an oil leak, this can (in rare cases) increase the risk of a fire.
NHTSA Campaign Number: 22V753
Manufacturer Volkswagen Group of America, Inc.
Components ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING
Potential Number of Units Affected 74,067
Summary
Volkswagen Group of America, Inc. (Volkswagen) is recalling certain 2021-2023 Audi Q5 Sportback, Q5, 2022-2023 Volkswagen Atlas FL, and Atlas Cross Sport vehicles. The engine connecting rod bearings may become damaged, which can result in engine failure.
Remedy
Dealers will inspect and, if necessary, replace an affected engine, free of charge. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed December 6, 2022. Owners may contact Volkswagen’s customer service at 1-800-893-5298 and Audi’s customer service at 1-800-253-2834. Volkswagen’s numbers for this recall are 13i4 (VW) and 13i5 (Audi).
Notes
Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or go to www.nhtsa.gov.

Country | Beginning Model Year | Ending Model Year | Vehicle | Vehicle Count |
USA | 2022 | 2023 | ATLAS | 16,135 |
USA | 2022 | 2023 | ATLAS CROSS SPORT | 9,279 |

Problem Description
Deviations in the mechanical production process of the connecting rods may have caused an increased particle occurrence in the engine oil circuit, which may lead to extensive wear and play and result in damage to the connecting rod bearings. A connecting rod bearing with continuously rising bearing play leads to excessive engine noise.
If the excessive engine noise and engine warning light is ignored and the vehicle continues to be driven, this condition may result in engine failure, potentially causing a loss of motive power while driving, and in rare cases a loss of engine oil, which may pose a risk of a vehicle fire.
Corrective Action
Inspect and, if necessary, replace the engine.
Precautions
If the recall condition is present in the vehicle, the driver may notice excessive engine noise and the Malfunction Indicator Light (MIL) may illuminate in the instrument panel. If this happens, customers are advised to contact an authorized Volkswagen dealer without delay to have the vehicle diagnosed/repaired.
Code Visibility
On or about October 21, 2022, the campaign code will be applied to affected vehicles.
Owner Notification
Owner notification will take place in November 2022. Owner letter examples are included in this bulletin for your reference.

November 09, 2021: Volkswagen learned about a fire case in a Volkswagen Atlas that may have originated in the engine compartment. Upon conducting a visual inspection of the vehicle, severe engine damage was found, however, Volkswagen was unable to determine the root cause at that time.
February 13-22, 2022: While investigating engine noise allegations at the Chattanooga plant, Volkswagen analyzed an engine, and shipped parts to the engine factory in Mexico for further analysis to identify potential root cause. Analysis process started. First results of the engine (for noise allegations) analyzed in Chattanooga during the week of February 13, 2022 showed manufacturing deviations at the connecting rod.
April 07, 2022: The first analysis of the engine from the November 2021 fire incident in Chattanooga was completed. This analysis identified manufacturing deviations at the connecting rod. Parts were shipped to the engine factory in Mexico for further, detailed analysis.
Week of May 01, 2022: Analysis of additional engines with noise allegations was initiated in order to determine potential root cause and to evaluate potential scope.
Week of July 17, 2022: Volkswagen received the final laboratory report, which confirmed multiple connecting rod manufacturing deviations as root cause for the engines that had been analyzed for noise allegations.
August 18, 2022: Volkswagen learned about a second fire case in a Volkswagen Atlas that may have originated in the engine compartment. Upon conducting a visual inspection of the vehicle, severe engine damage was found, however, Volkswagen was unable to determine the root cause. To date, Volkswagen is unable to access this vehicle for further analysis.
September 09, 2022: The topic was presented in Volkswagen Product Safety Committee. An evaluation of claims shows that the vast majority are for engine noise, and that the incidents occurred very early in vehicle life (below 1,000 miles/ 1600 km). Further details were requested regarding the root cause, characteristics of the failure modes, and scoping of potentially affected vehicles.
September 14, 2022: The topic was discussed with NHTSA ODI during the company´s quarterly meeting. Volkswagen conveyed that the investigations were still ongoing and were estimated to take another 2 weeks.
September 30, 2022: The topic was presented in Volkswagen and Audi Product Safety Committees, and a safety recall was decided based on analysis results that a sudden loss of motive power may occur and an engine oil leak cannot be ruled out. Volkswagen Group of America is aware of 1 fire case on a Volkswagen Atlas vehicle attributable to this issue and 1 additional fire case on a Volkswagen Atlas vehicle with an open root cause still under investigation. There are no reports of fires or crashes on Audi Q5 vehicles due to this issue.

ELSA is the only valid campaign inquiry & verification source. Campaign status must show “open.” If ELSA shows other open action(s), inform your customer so that the work can also be completed at the same time the vehicle is in the workshop for this campaign. Problem Description Deviations in the mechanical production process of the connecting rods may have caused an increased particle occurrence in the engine oil circuit, which may lead to extensive wear and play and result in damage to the connecting rod bearings. Corrective Action Inspect and, if necessary, replace the engine. Precautions If the recall condition is present in the vehicle, the driver may notice excessive engine noise and the Malfunction Indicator Light (MIL) may illuminate in the instrument panel. If this happens, customers are advised to contact an authorized Volkswagen dealer without delay to have the vehicle diagnosed/repaired. Code Visibility On or about October 21, 2022, the campaign code was applied to affected vehicles. Owner Notification Owner notification took place in November 2022. Owner letter examples are included in this bulletin for your reference. Additional Information Please alert everyone in your dealership about this action, including Sales, Service, Parts and Accounting personnel. Contact Warranty if you have any questions. Formulario n.° F_3.4_AHQ-GQO-CP-C_060 Rev.3.0 13i4 EE. UU. Volkswagen Customer Protection 13i4_DLR_LAUNCH Repair Available – Safety Recall 13i4 / Engine Connecting Rod This notice is for: Dealer Principal General Manager Sales Managers Service Manager Parts Manager Service Consultant Warranty Administrator Technicians Date: October 21, 2022 Issue: Deviations in the mechanical production process of the connecting rods may have caused an increased particle occurrence in the engine oil circuit, which may lead to extensive wear and play and result in damage to the connecting rod bearings.
