Volkswagen Group of America, Inc. (Volkswagen
) is recalling certain 2022 TAOS vehicles equipped with all-wheel drive. The engine control unit (ECU) software may cause a stall when coming to a stop.
Remedy
Dealers will update the ECU software, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed September 28, 2022. Owners may contact Volkswagen’s customer service at 1-800-893-5298. Volkswagen
’s number for this recall is 24iL.

Problem Description
Vehicles included in this recall are equipped with an all-wheel drive powertrain and have a specific software version installed in the engine control unit that, under specific conditions (high ambient temperatures, high engine load, A/C on), may lead to a stalling condition when coming to a stop. The engine can be immediately restarted manually. An engine that stalls while coming to a stop (20 mph/32 km/h) may increase the risk of a crash.
Corrective Action
Perform an ECU software update.
Code Visibility
On or about September 23, 2022, the campaign code will be applied to affected vehicles.

August 25, 2022: Two (2) vehicles were identified that were not reached/repaired in internal actions in VWM September 7, 2022: Topic discussed in a joint meeting of VW de Mexicoโs and VWAG Product Safety Committees, Decision: recall of the two (2) additional vehicles potentially affected worldwide.
This is an extension of the previously reported 24HH recall. From the date of vehicle launch on June 30, 2021 to the date of determination on July 30, 2021 for the 24HH recall, VWGoA was aware of 31 VINs that were identified as possibly exhibiting the recall issue.

Reprogramming
Overview โ Introduction
The Immobilizer is a theft-deterrent device that adds a layer of security to VWGoA vehicles that include the following brands: Audi, Bentley, Lamborghini, and VW
. Certain repairs such as replacing emission parts cannot be performed without resetting the immobilizer code for the vehicle. This is done by a technician using the VAS for PC software to synchronize the immobilizer code embedded in the ignition key with other codes resident on parts such as the Transmission Control Module, Engine Control Module, and Instrument Cluster.
Before you can replace an emission part
Whenever you replace an emission-related control module, the immobilizer must be reset using the VAS for PC software. This can only be done if you meet the following requirements:
- You have enrolled into the program (see step 1 - Complete Pass Thru Enrollment Forms)
- You have received an email from VWGoA that contains a Security ID and Password to access the immobilizer application hosted in Germany
- You have received an email from VWGoA that contains a certificate file (e.g. IndepeDeale.30001.300999.pfx)
- You have installed the certificate onto your PC
- You have obtained a J 2534-1 Pass Thru device (see recommended J 2534-1 Pass Thru devices)
- You have performed the steps outlined in VAS for PC Setup

Pass thru devices are available for purchase from a recommended Manufacturer for registered workshops to perform Immobilizer functions. The Pass Thru devices that have been tested to work with VAS for PC follow:

September 2022 24IL Page 6 of 12 Section B โ Update Engine Control Module Software NOTE Prior to launching the VAS Diagnostic Tester and starting an update, ensure the following conditions are met; The ODIS software is completely up to date. ๏ท Refer to the โAlertsโ section on ServiceNet home page for the current ODIS version. The battery charger is connected to the vehicle battery and remains connected for the duration of the software update. ๏ท Battery voltage must remain above 12.5 volts for the duration of the software update. Failure to do so may cause the update to fail, which could result in damage to the control module. Control modules damaged by insufficient voltage will not be covered. The screen saver and power saving settings are off. ๏ท Failure to do so may result in the tester entering power save mode during the software update, which could result in damage to the control module. The VAS Diagnostic Tester is plugged in using the supplied power adapters. ๏ท Under no circumstances should the tester be used on battery power alone during the software update. Failure to do so may result in the tester powering off during the update, which could result in damage to the control module. The VAS Diagnostics Interface MUST ONLY be connected to the tester with a USB cable. ๏ท Performing a software update using a Bluetooth or WiFi connection increases the risk of losing connection during the update, which could result in damage to the control module. It also greatly increases the time required to perform the update. Requests for additional time or parts will be denied if the GFF log shows the update was performed using Bluetooth or WiFi. WARNING Radiator Fan(s) may cycle ON high speed during the Update Process! There is a serious risk that personal injury may result if contact is made with spinning fan blades. The hazard warning lights prevent the system from switching to bus sleep mode during the update. CRITICAL REPAIR STEP STOP! In rare cases, a P0606 fault with symptom code 32902 may set after three key cycles after performing a software update. In order to prevent a comeback the following steps must be followed. ๏ท Turn off the ignition. ๏ท Disconnect the diagnostic head from the OBD port. ๏ท Wait 30 seconds. ๏ท Turn on the ignition. ๏ท Perform three key cycles (wait 30 seconds between each ignition off to on cycle). ๏ท Reconnect the diagnostic head to the OBD port. ๏ท Re-identify 0001-Engine Control Module. ๏ท If, after re-identifying the ECM, fault P0606 with Symptom Code 32902 is stored: o See the โImportant Repair Stepsโ at the end of this procedure. ๏ท If no faults are stored: o Proceed to the next step. These faults can only be cleared by following one of these steps: ๏ท Drive the vehicle a short distance (around the parking lot, for example). ๏ท After selecting โYesโ, turn the ignition off for 30 seconds, turn it back on and repeat the GFF exit program. ๏ท Clear faults using OBD (an additional key cycle may also be required). ๏ท Release the parking brake. ๏ท Disconnect the VAS tester. ๏ท Switch off and disconnect the battery charger. ๏ท Reinstall the battery cover. Proceed to Section C IMPORTANT REPAIR STEPS In rare cases, a P0606 fault with symptom code 32902 may set after three key cycles after performing a software update. In order to prevent a comeback repair these steps must be followed. ๏ท If MIL is illuminated, check ECM fault memory using Control Module OBD. ๏ท If fault P0606 with symptom code 32902 is stored: o Upload a copy of the GFF log to GFF Paperless and/or save a copy of the OBD log for review (10 additional TU can be paid ONLY if fault P0606 with symptom code 32902 is stored AND a GFF Paperless log is available or an OBD log showing the fault can be provided) o Follow these steps to clear the fault: 1. Put the car into โTransport Modeโ from the special functions tab using Operating Mode โDiagnosisโ. 2. Using Operating Mode โOBDโ, select the ECM and go to โControl Module OBD > Adaptationโ. 3. In Adaptation, in the filter box type โProtective Functionโ. Select Protective Function and double click on the input field and change from Enabled to OFF, then select Apply. ๏ท If you receive an error message, click on the green drop down arrow and select DTC memory. Click on OBD systems and clear faults. 4. Switch to Operating Mode โDiagnosisโ. Under the Special Functions tab deactivate โTransport Modeโ. 5. Return to ECM Control Module OBD. The DTC P0606 should now be โpassiveโ. Erase DTC by clicking on OBD systems and clear faults. 6. From ECM Control Module OBD, select Adaptation. 7. In Adaptation, find โProtective Functionโ and change from OFF to Enabled. ๏ท If the MIL is on and any fault other than P0606 with symptom code 32902 is stored: o Perform normal diagnosis of fault. o Diagnosis and repair of any fault other than P0606 with symptom code 32902 will not be covered under this action.
